Get to know Lafayette (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Lafayette.

Located in the heart of Acadiana at about two hundred kilometers west of New Orleans in Louisiana, Lafayette is the center of Cajun Country. Cajuns are an ethnic group in Louisiana, including among others, descendants of the Acadians of Canada, who were deported during the second half of the eighteenth century from what is now Canada. The deportation of the Acadians is part of the Great Upheaval. In addition to the Cajuns, Acadiana is home to several Native American tribes and enclaves of black Creoles. More recently, political refugees (from Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, in particular) have brought their families, their cultures, and their languages to the region.

Lafayette’s history is multifaceted and that can be seen by the different sights in the city such as the Acadiana Center for the Arts, the Alexandre Mouton House Museum, and Downtown Lafayette. There are a lot of restaurants where you must try Cajun food, which is some of the best in the States. It is obligatory that you try shrimps, crayfish, dirty rice, jambalaya, gumbo, dummy, and flange -- to mention a few. You can spend a week tasting different food and you will not get tired. There are also many bars and pubs with live music but most of them are open only during the weekend.

There are not so many Lafayette hostels from which you can choose your accommodation. However, Lafayette hostels have several significant advantages -- they have very good facilities, they are quite cheap, and they have a good location in the city center. In other words, finding a hostel in Lafayette is not a very hard task, especially on weekdays. If you visit the city at the weekend, it might be a good idea to book a hostel in Lafayette in advance in order not to pay a higher price for bookings in the last minute.
