Get to know Indianapolis (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis is the thirteenth-largest city in the United States. Affectionately called "Indy" by both local residents and tourists, it is a fast-growing metropolitan city originally famed for its long history of manufacturing and industry. Now commonly known for its amazing sports stadiums and historical monuments, Indianapolis is also a very well-established historical seat, with a number of buildings that date back to the early nineteenth century. It is most well known as the racing capital of the world, due to the notable number of racetracks found all throughout the state. If you’re contemplating vacationing in Indianapolis, expect lots of sports and high-speed thrills.

Indianapolis has its fair share of sights for the more introspective, however; it also boasts an impressive array of art galleries and museums, with the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis topping the ranks of places to see while you’re in town. The Motor Speedway and Hall of Fame, as well as the Lucas Oil Stadium, are definitely must-sees.

If you’re hankering for something more historical, Indianapolis offers the best of its own rich history in the many old buildings still viewable to the general public, such as the Indiana War Memorial, and the totally breathtaking (albeit somewhat melancholy) Crown Hill Cemetery. Indianapolis can also get you in touch with nature -- the Indianapolis Zoo, the Oldfields-Lilly House and Gardens, and the Eagle Creek Park all make for excellent sightseeing places for nature-lovers.

Of course, Indy is also a place that’s filled with excellent places to grab a bite. Whether it’s just off a hotdog stand in the street, or in some secluded little nook of a café, you’re bound to find that specific cuisine which appeals to your tastes and predilections. Shula’s Steak House and Weber Grill are definitely two places to check out if ever you’re in Indianapolis!

If you’re looking for places to crash, look for an Indianapolis hostel -- you can find many very well-located choices to suit any budget or taste.
