Pai is a small town in the north of Thailand, recently discovered for tourism. At this moment, this place is most visited by Thai people, but its hippie style is starting to call more tourists. You can reach Pai by plane or bus (this is the most used transport method) -– there are buses and minibuses that depart frequently from Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son.
Pai has a lot to offer, for every taste, budget, and level of adrenaline. Pai is known for its challenging and beautiful treks, water rafting, or elephant rides. From July to January, do a two-day tour rubber-rafting trip that starts in Pai River and takes you to Mae Hong Son (it's an amazing experience, and probably the best way to visit the surrounding areas –- you can book this tour in any tour agency or in your Pai hostel). If you prefer more quiet activities, Pai has also a lot to offer like cooking classes, massages courses, and a lot more. At night, don't expect a party vibe, but a more relaxed one -– there are a lot of nice restaurants and a few bars to have a drink, listen to some music, and meet other travelers.
During your stay, you should also visit Chiang Mai (the most touristic city in the north of Thailand, with beautiful landscapes and activities) and Mae Hong Son (known as the “Switzerland of Thailand” for its gorgeous landscapes –- nearby you can also visit the long-neck villages).
There are not so many hostels in Pai, so you need to book in advance. Pai's hostels are simple, keep its typical look, and are quite cheap.
