Elephant... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() "The first thing that struck me about the Chat House was not only it's location – a wonderful garden setting by a peaceful Buddhist temple – but the smiling welcome! If you've travelled in Thailand much at all you'll be aware how infrequent smiles can be from a local population often overrun with foreigners. Here at the Chat House smiles are broad and genuine and I immediately felt welcomed and wanted to be there. At these points in time prices of rooms don't matter anymore, even..."The Lek House was where I wanted to stay and fortunately the tuk tuk driver I met at the bus station was also offering to take me there. It's only a 10-15 minute walk from the bus stop but it's worth getting a tuk tuk. It cost me 20 Baht. The owner Daeng was there to greet me when I arrived in the dark and showed me to my room.
There was an older Italian guy in a private room and he and Daeng spent two hours my first night discussing how he would cope on a 2 day slow boat ride to Luang... "The longer I spent at Mae Kok Villa the more irritating it became for me. The owner Mr Lucas was very much a "character" and some what entertaining, but it became apparent he was disgruntled with dealing with foreigners and jaded by the whole experience of running a guesthouse for such a long time. He was sick of haggling over prices but I can't say I blame people for asking for a lower price because some of the rooms really needed a good scrub to make them liveable for human beings.
