Perm -- a town of slightly more than one million people -- is an important railway junction on the Trans-Siberian Railway; lines reach to Central Russia, the north part of the Urals, and the far east of Russia. In the early twentieth century, it was a major center of the Revolution, which was silenced bloodily. The Memorial Complex on the mountain tower in Perm includes a monument to the fighters of the this revolution, the burial place of party members and participants in the revolution, and a diorama museum. Also in the early twentieth century, the first university in the Urals was opened in Perm. During World War II, the city was a major production center and it has remained an important industrial city through today.
Perm has thirteen museums, the most famous of which is the Perm Art Gallery, which stores a world-famous collection of Perm wooden sculpture. It is one of the richest repositories of masterpieces of Russian icon paintings. The Perm Regional Museum contains unique objects of the Perm animal style; a paleobotanical collection; many rare books; and ethnographic, numismatic, and other collections. The Perm animal style (or Shamanic images, Chudski small icons, cult casting) is a local version of the animal style of bronze art sculpture from the seventh century BC spread in the forest and forest-tundra regions of North-Eastern Europe and Western Siberia. In the city center, between the two largest administration buildings, there is the organ concert hall of the Perm Regional Philharmonic.
There are very few hostels in Perm and booking one could be a big problem, as the city is large and it is visited by many people so hostels in Perm are sometimes fully booked. Most Perm hostels are located in the central part of the city. Hostels in Perm have low to moderate prices and offer good conditions for the traveler even during the cold Russian winter.
