Lisbon, the gorgeous capital of Portugal, is one of the most interesting cities in the world -- since it has some of the greatest budget hostels, it's not a city to be missed.

For the die-hard sightseers and culture-soakers, the downtown of Baixa and Rossio are the place to stay. This cultural hotspot has great food, crazy nightlife, and lots of shopping and cultural attractions from which to choose. It's also within walking distance of all the different transport options you need, including trams, buses, trains, and ferries. This area is also well known for modern and boutique hostels in Lisbon that give a touch of class to the backpacking lifestyle.

If you want a quieter place that is still close to the downtown area but away from the main centre, then you have many options -- stay in Alfama and Castello if exploring Castello Sao Jorge and admiring the beautiful terracotta-roofed houses of Lisbon from the many Miraduoros is high on your list. Or if you just want to relax in one of Lisbon's many parks and gardens stay in Campo Pequeno or near Parque Eduardo VII.

Or if you want to focus on the UNESCO World heritage sites and museums in Belem or the 1998 world expo area of Parque de Narcoes, then you can stay in the Lisbon hostels in these areas that are away from downtown but perfect if you want to focus on these areas.

To save money on visiting some of Lisbon's best attractions, visit on a Sunday, because many of the best museums and monuments are free -- this will give you extra money to spend on the amazing food found in Lisbon's pastelarias.
