Dunedin Herberges   "High on a hill overlooking downtown Dunedin, Elm Lodge is a hike to get to, but well worth the effort. It’s only a five- to ten-minute walk to the Octagon, Dunedin’s center, but it’s a twenty- or twenty-five-minute walk back up the hill, including two hundred stairs.
The hostel’s rooms are spread between three buildings, all sharing one yard. The buildings are close... "This is a small and friendly hostel in an old manor house that has seen better days. The rooms are simple and clean, but some of them have poor lighting. The toilets and showers are reasonably clean, but are old and have a musty feel about them. The kitchen is small but adequate. The lounge is nice and cosy and there are plenty of comfortable chairs to sink into and watch a bit of...  "Staying in Dunedin? On Top Backpackers is a good place to stay. Located in the center of town and with new facilities and friendly staff, you won't be disappointed. On Top Backpackers is across the street from the Town Hall on the corner of Filleul Street and Moray Place. Just look for the large white building with lots of large windows and the hostel sign.
On Top Backpackers has good, new,...  "Penny's Backpackers is a BBH hostel in Dunedin. It's located three blocks from the Octagon, which is where all the action is, and it's within walking distance of the bus/train station too -- although the hostel does offer free pickups most of the time too. Security appears to be reasonable, with codes on the inner door (and also on the outside door after a certain hour).

It's actually comprised of the main two-story house, a separate dormitory structure, and another separate self-contained cottage. Staying in one of the more private rooms (single, twin, or double) in the main house is like staying in an extremely comfortable boarding house rather than a backpackers. The only drawback for... "From the outside, this hostel doesn't look very special. However, it is located in the heart of Dunedin and is an ideal location to explore the city. It is within two minutes walk of everything you need including museums, galleries, cafes, bars, and lots more.
The hostel is newly refurbished and this is reflected in the modern new rooms -- all of which have good beds, cosy duvets, and nice..."Queen's Gardens Backpackers (formerly Penguin Palace) is a convenient place to stay in the centre of Dunedin, as it is just five minutes' walk from the Octagon (no steep hills to climb) and is handy to Intercity and local buses. It also has twenty-four-hour check-in -- although if you are arriving late at night or in the "wee small hours" you will need to go to the Leviathan Hotel two minutes'... From there, it is about a 5 minute walk into the Octagon which is the very centre of town. It's cool, though, with a HUGE industrial kitchen, little nooks and crannies...
