"Continuing along the main seaside road, about ten minutes past town is the Lazy Shag Backpackers. In few words, this hostel is a run-of-the-mill, no stand-outs, no frills, just the to-be-expected basics. There is a kitchen, computer corner, and a TV area downstairs. The hostel looks like a modern lodge, without any rustic charm, save the fireplace. But, even it is awkwardly set off in a narrow space separating the two rooms. The bedrooms are standard. "Adelphi Lodge is a centrally located hostel in Kaikoura, featuring quiet rooms and a fun atmosphere. With its comfortable rooms and low prices, it's an excellent hostel. The Location The location is unbeatable -- it's directly in the center of town, right in the middle of all the shops. It's right across from the whale-watching tours, and only a short walk to any of the other tours in the area. "Cray Cottage, owned and operated by Jakki and Don, is a charming little place to stay in the beachside town of Kaikoura. They are located about a 15 minute walk out from the main center of town, but offer free rides to and from the bus stop as well as loaner bicycles while you're staying with them. The hostel is located in a separate building behind their house. The dormitory, bathrooms, and kitchen are very clean and beds are made up with linens and duvets which is a nice touch. "Sunrise Lodge is a wonderful little hostel located just a short walk from Kaikoura town centre. The owners are fantastic and really go to the extreme to make you feel welcome. A free pick-up is provided from the bus-stop in town and they take the time to show you to your bed and introduce the other people staying at the hostel. Likewise, at the end of your stay, there is no pressure to leave before a certain time and they will drop you back into town to meet your bus. "Up a narrow steep pathway five minutes above the main street of Kaikoura lies Top Spot. It has the same owners as The Lazy Shag, a few meters north along the coast, but unlike its modern counterpart, this hostel has fifty more years under its roof, which gives it a more relaxed old-fashioned feel. Rose-laced arches cover the trail to the front of one of the two white houses, which boasts as its motto "not just a place to stay ... an experience." "Dusky Lodge is a large hostel with an institutional feel. Its crowning glory is its pool complex, consisting of a landscaped, heated pool; a hot tub (no jets, but it's heated to 102 degrees Fahrenheit); and a sauna. The pools are clean and pleasant; we did not try the sauna, but it looks well-kept from the outside. Regrettably, the same cannot be said about the rest of the hostel.
