"Recommended - I stayed in a double room in Wally's for five nights (originally booked for three, then extended). It is an excellent place to stay. There are new owners, an English family there about eight months now who keep the place running very smoothly and it is spotlessly clean. The rooms are very spacious, toilets, and showers are very clean.The kitchen is well equipped, very clean, and is big enough to accommodate quite a few people at a time. "Under new management! Great Hostel. - Toad Hall has recently been taken over (2010) by a new couple determined to make it one of the best. They are in the middle of a huge refurbishment at the moment. For new photos of how it looks go and look for yourself on their facebook site. We had a fantastic stay here. It was clean and comfortable with very friendly staff. We loved the huge communal spaces and the roof terrace. "As prisons go, Napier Prison Backpackers seems to be a rather comfortable accommodation -- you're given keys to the lock on your cell and the front door. As hostels go, the accommodation may leave something to be desired, but you can't beat it for novelty value. The hostel is an actual prison built more than a century ago that was shut down in the early 1990s. Now it's back open, housing backpackers instead of prisoners.
