Murchison, New Zealand, is a village located on the South Island of New Zealand; it belongs to the Tasman Region, which covers the north end of the comparatively sparsely populated South Island. Murchison has no access to the sea; in fact, it is near the Four Rivers Plain and Highway Six connects the rural area to bigger towns in the north, such as Nelson. It can also be used as a stopover on the way to the West Coast Region. Farming and tourism are the biggest economic factors for the village with a population of roughly five hundred. The history of the village dates back to the nineteenth century. It is believed that Murchison was also the site for the first non-military suicide attack after a lost court case between two local farmers. Outdoor activities such as canoeing and kayaking are the biggest attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Murchison is considered to be the “Whitewater Capital” of New Zealand. The numerous rivers such as Matakitaki, Maruia, Gowan, and the mighty Buller offer great opportunities for sporty tourists who love mountain biking, kayaking, and canoeing. The rivers range from class two to four whitewater -- they are not for the faint-hearted. The so-called "Old Ghost Road" is an excellent option for mountain-biking enthusiasts. The trail, connecting Lyell to the rough West Coast, is more than eighty-five kilometres long. A relaxed nine-hole golf course and even helicopter tours are available in Murchison, as well.

Murchison is small. However, there are a couple of options to stay -- you can find some hotels, guesthouses, and -- for those on a budget -- an option for a Murchison, New Zealand hostel. The accommodations are comparatively small and sometimes are typical family businesses. Most places offer free Wi-Fi and free parking. Even your Murchison, New Zealand hostel offers Wi-Fi throughout the whole accommodation. If you are on a tight budget, a Murchison, New Zealand hostel is the best choice for you.
