Get to know Safed (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Safed.

Safed (also called Tzfat) is a city located in the north of Israel near the Sea of Galilee or Kinneret. It is often considered the spiritual and art capital of Israel and Judaism. It is a biblically significant city, with large ties to the Kabbalah, yoga, art, and meditation. No trip to Safed is complete without a stroll down the lane way that makes up the Artists Colony in the Old City. This lane way is a fascinating tour of Jewish culture turned into unique paintings, jewelry, sculptures, and glass. Make sure to dress appropriately, as Tzfat is located in the mountains and often is extremely hot in the summer and snowy in the winter.

Getting to and from Safed is very easy. Since Israel has a world-class coach bus system and is a rather small country, you can easily get to Safed by coach bus (except on Shabbat) and therefore do not need a car. The main bus station is located just on the outskirts of downtown and the Old City and therefore is within a short walk or taxi ride.

The hostels in Safed are scattered throughout the city. Some are located downtown, some in the Old City, and some in the hills overlooking the city. Therefore there are plenty of Safed hostels and the traveler can choose which they want. Safed, however, is relatively small and you are always within a short walk, cab, or public bus ride to any amenity you need. Safed is a must-do for any traveler that is interested in art, spirituality, or Judaism.
