Get to know Denpasar (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Denpasar.

Denpasar is the capital and most populated city of Bali. It is the city where most tourists arrive as the only airport of the island is located here. However, it is not worth staying at a hostel here much longer than it takes to rest after a long flight, as the city offers little charm and very few attractions and is the perfect example of an overcrowded and extremely polluted Asian city. In fact, most foreigners stop here only to arrange visa issues, do some shopping for electronics, or enjoy the cheap food that's sold at prices unseen in any other parts of the island.

The few sights that the city boasts include the Museum Negeri Propinsi Bali, which offers an exhibition about Balinese culture; the Pura Jagatnatha, a state temple dedicated to Sanghyang Widi; and the Bajra Sandhi Monument, an impressive monument celebrating Bali's history. If you are not in search of museums, however, you are better off booking a hostel elsewhere, such as taking day trips from Denpasar to the nice beach resort towns of Sanur (thirty minutes from Denpasar), Seminyak (twenty minutes from Denpasar), Nusa Dua (forty minutes from Denpasar), or discover one of the spectacular centuries-old Hindu temples, including Uluwatu to the south and Tanah Lot to the west.

Transportation from Denpasar to the most popular tourist attractions is quite easy, even if you're staying in a hostel and you do not have your own vehicle. The modern and air-conditioned Sarbagita buses take people around the southern part of the island for a reasonable fee. Because of its location right in the middle of the island, Denpasar has a very warm climate with temperature constantly in the zone of twenty-eight to thirty-three degrees Celsius.
