Mysore is a large city in the southern part of the state of Karnataka, India. Of the most impressive of the sights to see here is the Mysore Palace, which gives you an insight into the history of the town and the Wodeyar family, who ruled the city and lived in the palace for generations. The palace itself is well worth the visit, and as a foreigner, they give you an audio guide included as a part of your ticket that is quite informative. It should take you around an hour or so to get around.
Walking up and down the main street section with all of the shops is fascinating and you can watch the people go about their every day lives here. If you delve into the back alleys behind the shopfronts you will find the market place which if filled with fruit vendors, incense sticks, coloured paints, bangles, and spices. You can get lost in there, but it is quite fun and worth a visit.
In the morning for beautiful views, you can climb up to the monkey temple on the top of the hill. It gives you a nice overview of the city. There are a few other temples and attractions to visit but these are the main notable three to do -- especially if you have a short amount of time. The majority of the things you will need during your stay are within the one area, so if you ask at your Mysore hostel, they should be able to point you in the direction of where you get good food, tuk tuks, and bargains in the area.
