The small town of St. Blasien, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is situated in the Waldshut district, in the state of Baden-Württemberg. Around four thousand people permanently live in this small town, which is sixty kilometres southeast of Freiburg. Getting there from Freiburg is possible by public transport; train and bus services are also available. However, it is easier and faster to get there by car.

The location in the Black Forest (in German, "Schwarzwald"), makes it a very popular tourist destination with a long history. One of the landmarks of St. Blasien is the cathedral, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The church burnt down in the late eighteenth century and was rebuilt in a Neoclassical style. The characteristic dome is just over sixty metres high and has a diameter of just under fifty metres. The former Benedictine Monastery Church St. Blasien (also known as Saint Blaise), was built in the late eighteenth century, but the history of the monastery dates back to the tenth century. Sanatorium St. Blasien was open for almost a century from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. It mainly treated lung diseases and offered medical screenings as well as prevention measures.

The architecture in the small town is well worth seeing. One of the highlights is the painted baroque sundial with a lot of details; it was painted in the late eighteenth century. If you want to see this, go to the street “Am Kurgarten” and check out this piece of art.

The region around Freiburg is one of the mildest in Germany. In summer, the average maximum temperatures hover around twenty-six degrees Celsius. In winter, the maximum temperatures can drop to five degrees Celsius. The temperature level also depends on the elevation.

The region has numerous outdoor activities to offer for sporty tourists. In winter, the biggest mountain in the Black Forest, Feldberg, welcomes skiers and snowboarders to enjoy sixteen ski runs, fourteen lifts, and more than thirty kilometres of pistes. In summer, the nearby Schluchsee is very suitable for everyone who likes to go for a swim and sailing. In addition to that, numerous hiking and biking trails are available. If you like hiking, biking, swimming, or sailing, then the area is very suitable for you.

In St. Blasien, you can chose from several hotels, holiday apartments, and traditional guesthouses. There are no hostels in St. Blasien, Baden-Württemberg, Germany itself, but nearby options are located in Menzenschwand, around eight kilometres away. This hostel is open all year round.
