Around four thousand people permanently live in this small town, which is sixty kilometres southeast of Freiburg. Getting there from Freiburg is possible by public transport; train and bus services are also available. However, it is easier and faster to get there by car.
The location in the Black Forest (in German, "Schwarzwald"), makes it a very popular tourist destination with a long history. One of the landmarks of St. Blasien is the cathedral, one of the largest of its kind in Europe. The church burnt down in the late eighteenth century and was rebuilt in a Neoclassical style. The characteristic dome is just over sixty metres high and has a diameter of just under fifty metres. The former Benedictine Monastery Church St. Blasien (also known as Saint Blaise), was built in the late eighteenth century, but the history of the monastery dates back to the tenth century. Sanatorium St. Blasien was open for almost a century from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. It mainly treated lung diseases and offered medical screenings as well as prevention measures.
The architecture in the small town is well worth seeing. One of the highlights is the painted baroque sundial with a lot of details; it was painted in the late eighteenth century. If you want to see this, go to the street “Am Kurgarten” and check out this piece of art.
