Get to know Fredericia (no more "I wish I knew this before")

This section is dedicated to take away all your "I wish someone had told me that before I went!" experiences. This way, you can spend less time settling in, and more time making new friends in your chosen hostel. We share our insider knowledge of tips, tricks and important things to look out for in Fredericia.

Fredericia is one of the more unique towns in Denmark. Named for its founder and the municipality of Fredericia, it is located in East Jutland. The town was created in the 17th century by the King of Denmark, Frederick III. What makes this town so unique is that it is a fortress city with a large port too.

Getting around in Fredericia is best done on foot. Almost all the attractions worth seeing, including the monuments, restaurants, and even the hostels, are connected to each other by short distances with easy pedestrian accessibility. In fact, most of the streets in town are for pedestrians only.

A good place to start your tour of Fredericia is at Madsby Park. It is a nice family park with playgrounds featuring wooden towers for children to play in, a small lake with rowboats, a tiny farm and petting zoo, as well as a pedal-powered go-kart circuit. You can find a couple of hostels near Madsby Park if you want to be within a short distance of it.

For a taste of history, the Landsoldatpladsen is a good beginning. It is a statue of an unknown soldier from the 19th century. This is unique because it is not of a king, general, or another military leader. The statue is a tribute to the many soldiers killed in the Danish Civil War, namely the 6th of July 1849, a moment during the First Schleswig War.

After this, you can revive yourself back at your hostel with a hearty Danish meal, courtesy of the welcoming local townsfolk. Then, head out to one of the many pubs, restaurants, and theaters in town. One of the most highly recommended places is the Det Bruunske Pakhus, a concert venue where many local artists play blues and jazz. Located in an old warehouse, this place and the Fredericia Theater are two of the best locations for good entertainment in the entire town.
