Jacó, Costa Rica, is a medium-sized town in the middle of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Jacó is famous for its surfing and its international surfing competition held at the end of February or the beginning of March. During this time, Jacó is popular and vibrant; during the rest of the year, the town struggles to keep the tourism industry going. The town is rather plain and offers as many Western fast food restaurants as typical family ones. Jacó is built on surfing and has little to appeal to anyone else.
The hostels in Jacó are centrally located, and in most cases, within a short walk to the surfing beaches. The town has all the amenities you could want or need from ATMs and banks, to restaurants and bars, and laundromats. With little competition for tourism, Jacó hostels are often quite plain -- do your research before booking. During the surf competition, booking in advance is strongly advised but during the rest of the year, walking up should suffice.
Jacó is easily accessible by car or bus as it is located on main highways. The bus station offers popular destinations such as Montezuma, Manuel Antonio, or San Jose and its international airport. Jacó is a great place for surfers to catch a wave or learn to surf. If that is not your style, then it will only appeal to you as a stopover between bus trips.
