Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Nevada

There are several destinations in Nevada where you will find hostels. The majority of the hostels you will find in the "sin city," Las Vegas as it is one of the biggest party scenes around. There are so many different things that you can do in Las Vegas it is crazy. Whether it's having a gamble in one of the many casino's, nightclubbing, catching one of the many spectacular stage shows, shopping, or even historical tours, there is nothing you cannot find in Vegas! There are two regions that are prominent in Vegas, the new strip and the old strip. Majority of the hotels and things to do are found along the new strip, but many of the hostels are located on the old strip. If you are wanting to move from your hostel down to the new strip for a party, buses do run frequently during the day but check what times they run during the evenings. The area of the old strip is often referred to as Fremont Street.

Outside of Las Vegas, there is so much that you can explore depending on your interests. You can take day trips to the Grand Canyon or even explore it by air from a helicopter. The Hoover Dam is also an interesting day trip that you can take to learn about how water was controlled and distributed through the area through this cutting edge engineering marvel

Between Las Vegas and the northern parts of Nevada you will find a great deal of desert area where the government tested the first ever atomic bomb. They have an atomic bomb museum that you can visit to learn about nuclear developments and testing in the area.

Reno is the large city in the north that is also dedicated pretty much to gambling. There isn't too much else to do here other than visit casinos and the odd museum.

Carson City is the capital city of Nevada and has a lot more other things going for it than gambling. It's surrounded by some pretty spectacular state parks and is situated on Lake Tahoe. While the two cities are quite close to each other, Carson City is the one that would be a more enticing stopover for a backpacker. Your hostel here should be able to give you the ins and outs on the area to make the most out of your trip. To explore this region of Nevada, it is recommended to have a car to get around as public transport is not as great as it is in the south heading through Las Vegas.
