Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Ceuta

Ceuta is a autonomous Spanish state on the African continent. It is bordered by Morocco on the west and by the Strait of Gibraltar on all other sides. It is historically a military stronghold and free port, along with Melilla which is another Spanish autonomous city in Africa. Technically, Ceuta is part of the European Union; it uses the Euro and is considered a special low-tax zone.

Getting to Ceuta is possible by ferry from Algeciras in the south of Spain or by flying into Sania Ramel Airport in Morocco. The road is open for traffic from the airport but otherwise the border is closed.

Ceuta is only 18.5 square kilometres, so it is relatively compact and easy to get around in. There are only a couple of hostels in Ceuta; backpackers tend to stay in either family-run pensions or budget hotels. Look for the word “hostal” when searching for a place to stay, but keep in mind that traditional European-style hostels are hard to find here.

Once you have your hostel accommodation sorted, you can set out to explore this tiny Spanish city. Ceuta’s skyline is dominated by Monte Hacho; outdoor enthusiasts should take half a day to walk to the top for the view back over the city and harbour. Other outdoor activities include exploring the harbour and fortifications by boat.

For culture and history buffs, Ceuta is chock full of archaeological and architectural remains. The style is predominantly Moorish with Christian influences; explore the Casa de Los Dragones or the underground Museo de la Basilica Tardorrmana. One of the top tourist choices in Ceuta is the Royal Walls. The extensive fortifications date to the 5th century, when Ceuta was a Byzantine outpost. Other empires that have ruled Ceuta are the Greeks, Romans, Vandals, and Visigoths. Following several invasions, some successful and others not, Ceuta was ruled by Moorish-Andalusian rule and later was part of the Portuguese Empire before ceding to Spain in the late 1600s, where it has remained ever since.

Ceuta packs a wealth of history and culture into a very small area. The Spanish and African influences are very evident here and travellers with an eye for architecture and history will enjoy visiting. Whatever you choose to do in Ceuta, you will enjoy it.
