Our handwritten guide on Backpacking Bremen State

Situated in the northern part of Germany, Bremen is also known as the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and is the smallest of Germany’s 16 federal states. It is also called the State of Bremen. The state consists of 2 cities: Bremer and Bremerhaven. The state is completed surrounded by the state of Lower Saxony. Bremen is the state capital.

The city of Bremen is 1200 years old and much of its history can be found in the sites that are located in its City Centre. Visitors can see 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the marketplace. These are the statue of Roland and the Renaissance Bremen Town Hall. The statue of Roland was built in the 1400’s as the “protector of trade.” Locals say that if you rub his knees it ensures your return to the city. There is also a 1200-year-old Cathedral, St. Peter’s, that offers a gorgeous view of the city if you climb to the top of its 256 steps. Statues of characters from the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales can be found on the streets of Bremen. There are stops along the 375 mile Grimm Fairy Tale Route that features grottos, castles museums and medieval towns.

Visitors to the city can enjoy a 2-hour tour at Beck’s brewery or visit Schnoor which has tiny shops and a tea room. Bremen has a casino and a football stadium. Weser Stadium is the only stadium in Germany one can reach by boat. Kids and kids at heart will enjoy going to an Escape Room, ice skating at the Paradice, or putting on 3-D glasses and seeing the Schwarzlichthof. The Universum with its whale science study and earthquake simulator might also be a hit. Bremen Burgerpark has been compared to Central Park in NYC. Its features include fountains, bridges, lakes, a café and nature trails that can be explored on foot, by bike, or in a rowboat.

Bremerhaven is known for its large harbor area. There is a ship museum where visitors can climb aboard and even a submarine that is open to the public. Other places of interest include the Kunsthalle Art Gallery, the Zoo am Meer, the Climate House, beaches, Weser Lido, and several museums.

There are lots of places to spend the night in both cities with brand name and private hotels, places to park a motorhome, hostels, rooms on ships, and apartments. Hostels may also be located under the hotel and backpacker categories. Most of the hostels in the 2 cities receive very high marks from travelers.
