98SG is a decent enough place to put your feet up for a few days. It has all the basics of a general hostel and the young man running it is certainly kindly and reasonably helpful, if a bit on the timid side -- which is strange for someone running a hostel.
The Location
The location is quite ideal, as the hostel is a two-minute walk from a sky train station, which makes it a good location. This is simply because there is a fairly superior transportation network in Singapore, starting with the sky train. From a tourists perspective, it takes you everywhere. There are also a number of restaurants at the base of the hostel which are quite good. Locals spend lots of time here sipping Tiger beer and chowing down (try the intestine soup). There is a 7-11 a three minute walk away as well.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This place actually only has dorm beds in roughly six rooms over two floors. The beds themselves are decent enough. The quality of the showers is a blessing if you have been around the rest of Southeast Asia for awhile, and there are pay washing machines and kitchens on each floor. The overall cleanliness is pretty good.
Common Spaces
The common spaces are ideal from a hostelers' perspective. On each floor there is a table in the center room (what more do you want)? On the first floor there is also a TV with a couch and chairs and a DVD booklet filled with some prime choices that are free to view.
Summary
Overall it is a decent hostel in most respects (despite the pricey deposit for the room key). There are only so many beds available and only so much space which gives it a cozy, lived in feel which is quite nice. The owner tries to quiet things down by midnight so as to not keep people awake in the adjoining rooms, and everything you need is within a block or so. We would have no qualms about going back there.
