The Location
Wira Hostel is a small basement hostel located just west of the St. Pauli (red light) district. It is directly across from the U-Bahn station, but is not well lit and can be easy to miss.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel has only a handful of rooms -- all spacious dorm rooms, with bunk beds, some with their own common space and lockers. The rooms are rarely locked. Two unisex shower rooms are located near the hostel's reception, each room further equipped with two shower stalls. An area is partitioned off the hallway directly opposite to form change rooms. The effect is almost unnervingly not private.
Common Spaces
In addition to the lounge/table in some dorm rooms, an abundance of common spaces are sprinkled throughout the hostel. There is a large kitchen (where goodies can be found around breakfast time), and lounges are sprinkled throughout the hallways. Social interaction is bound to occur if the hostel is full.
Summary
Overall, Wira Hostel is very spacious, clean, and comfortable. However, given the small number of bed spaces and consequently few guests, the hostel environment is quiet, almost residential. It appears to be a better place for longer-term residence, or for group functions, rather than for a backpacker's stay. The high price, short reception hours, and expensive key deposit (a small fee or passport) are also deterrents.
