Seadragon Backpackers is a clean, privately-owned hostel that is located between Brighton and Hove. Although the rooms are small, the beds aren't overly comfortable, and the common areas are not ideally-situated within the hostel.
The Location
Seadragon Backpackers is located at the limit between Brighton and Hove, which is convenient if you want to visit both, but not as centrally-located if you only choose to see one of the two towns. It is only a few minutes away from the West Pier and the beachfront, but a good twenty-minute walk away from the North Laine area, and even farther away from the Brighton Train Station. The city does offer a good bus service, so the easiest way to get to the hostel from this station is to hop on the number 6 bus.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This small, privately-owned hostel offers a few rooms with the choice of two- of four-bed dorms (no private rooms are available). The rooms are small and do not offer private lockers, but paid lockers are available in the basement. The beds are squeaky and not very comfortable, but the linens are included. There are large bathrooms on each floor, shared by only two dorms. The showers are decent and the bathrooms offer plenty of space to get all your things organized.
Common Spaces
The Seadragon Backpackers hostel offers a few scattered common spaces. The first is a common lounge area right when you come in. It has a few bean bags, a TV, and a good selection of movies for quiet nights in. In the cellar basement, the hostel has a locker room, kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is well-equipped and offers a small self-serve breakfast, and you can find the dining room is in a dark corner of the kitchen. Because the kitchen and dining rooms are located in the basement, far removed from the dorms and other common areas, it is not the best place to meet other travelers, unless you happen to get hungry at the exact same time.
This nonsmoking hostel is quiet, but can be social if it becomes filled with travelers who gather in the common lounge area. Note that outside business hours, you will be given a code to the side door. However, it can be quite tricky to get this side door open, which means you might have to wait until another guest lets you in, or you might have to be the guest who is repeatedly interrupted to open the door for others.
Summary
This is a decent hostel, but it lacks in the small details and atmosphere. Note that the check-in hours are very restricted, so be sure to arrive within them or you'll have to wait until the next day. This also means that guests are pretty much left to their own devices because there is no staff on-site to assist them outside these hours. The hostel staff are also very limited in the tourist information they can share, but some can be found on the hostel's website.
