Set on spacious grounds by the sea, four kilometers out of Oamaru town itself, Old Bones Backpackers is a homey and incredibly comfortable and clean backpackers retreat designed to give travelers a luxurious break. Consequently it is not cheap, but with only eight twin rooms spanning the central communal area, which is just gorgeous, your money is well spent. It is not hard to see why so many guests extend their stay upon visiting.
Independently run and managed by a most hospitable man and his two dogs, Old Bones strives to make you feel comfortable and at home. The hostel has a relaxed feel, helped by the open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area which boasts a cosy central fireplace and sea views. Guests are treated more like visiting friends rather than customers and the owner openly admits that this project is a means of lifestyle not profit. There is plenty of information about the local wildlife (penguins) and an internet console provides free access to the web.
Built in 2005, the place is modern and clean and all facilities function properly. Rooms contain good, solid and comfortable beds with nice homey touches such as reading lamps, decent curtains, and good soundproofing -- not that you need it. The bathrooms are impeccably clean, with good hot powerful showers and some modern stylish touches to the finishing. The central communal area has two fully equipped kitchen zones with a full compliment of crockery, cooking utensils, herbs, spices, tea, coffee, sugar, and olive oil. Four wooden dining tables sit the other side of the kitchen worktops and relaxing couches and chairs encircle the fireplace.
