USA Hostels San Francisco is conveniently located four blocks up on Post Street from Union Square. When arriving at SFO international airport, you may use the BART to Powell Street -- go up Powell to Post and walk four blocks up. The hostel is on the left hand side. Otherwise door-to-door shuttle is also available for a charge.
The staff are friendly and helpful, which is enjoyable after an international flight. Rooms are basic but really clean with comfy mattress and only two sets of bunk beds, a sink, individual lockers, and a clothes closet. Not all dorms have en-suite bathroom as recently advertised, but there are at least five showers per floor. There's a sink with large mirror for girls' makeup and hair drying.
The place is cozy, with orange, green, and purple decor and even if it's still under renovation, this doesn't bother the guest at all. There is a common area by the reception with Wi-Fi access for those traveling with a laptop. Hostel life happens on the basement with a TV lounge (looks like a movie theater), a well equipped kitchen, an internet access center (there is a charge), a lounge with billiards, and a laundry. For those who like partying, this is the place, but it as all happens downstairs, it doesn't bother those looking for rest or good night sleep.
They offer a free "all you can make" pancake breakfast from 7 to 10 a.m. There are a bunch of free or cheap activities like a city walking tour, Muir Woods and wine country, and Yosemite Valley. Even if you booked on the internet, you have the option to pay cash or with travelers check upon arrival, which saves you a 10% fee for credit card processing.
After staying in several San Francisco hostels, this is becoming our favorite one because of its central location and the feeling that place is really secure (key card access to building and room as well as the individual lockers).
