Besprechung von Hostelz.com
The Big Apple Hostel is quite a deal for a New York City hostel. It is located right in the middle of Times Square and easily accessible from almost any subway line. This makes it convenient for arrival, departure and visiting all of Manhattan's attractions. Walking along Forty-Fifth Street, you will notice a flag hanging out above the front door, making the hostel quite easy to locate.

The building is a little old, but this is true of almost all the buildings in the surrounding area. There is an elevator to take you up to the higher floors so you can avoid hauling all of your bags up seven or eight flights of stairs. However, sometimes the elevator will not work properly if there are more than three people or lots of luggage. In this case some will need to take the stairs or wait a few moments and catch the elevator on the next trip up.

The first floor is home to the common TV room with pay Internet access and a full kitchen open to use by the guests. The kitchen is recently remodeled (December 2006) and is quite nice. There are also laundry machines located in the basement for the guests to use for a small fee. Out the back of the hostel is a patio area with tables and chairs to enjoy some fresh air.

For those who wish to avoid cooking, there is a wonderful deli right next door to the hostel. They have made-to-order breakfast and lots of hot and cold sandwiches as well as a lunch and dinner buffet. In addition, there are hundreds of other restaurants within walking distance as the hostel is in the middle of Times Square.

The rooms are fairly roomy and cleaned everyday by the hostel so they stay in good order. Each floor is divided into two sections of four rooms, each room consisting of two bunk beds, and each section has two showers with toilets. There were not many people at the hostel during our stay so we only shared our room for one of the three nights. We never waited for the showers either; the facilities seem quite sufficient.

The hostel is a very friendly place filled with all sorts of travelers. There are the young backpackers from all over the world, families, and everything in between. The staff is quite friendly, but be sure to bring your key with you at all times. They are strict about this rule. It is not enough for one traveler in a group to have a key. Each person must have his/her key when entering the hostel. The front desk may ask to see your key if they have not seen you before.

We saw a mouse run across the floor of the kitchen during our stay, which isn't uncommon in buildings in NYC. The hostel did not seem to have a big rodent problem, but we also did not leave any food in the kitchen. All in all, the hostel is very comfortable, centrally located in Manhattan, and clean -- with the exception of the mouse.

Excellent Location Makes Up For Slight Faults
I stayed at The Big Apple for four nights in October 2008. The location is absolutely fantastic for the price! Right in Times Square with excellent Subway links and easy access to the airports. The room itself was very basic -- just four bunks with no lockers or storage space, and could do with some Air Con as it got very hot with four people in there (hate to think what it would be like in summer!) but to be honest I didn't spend a lot of time in the room. The kitchen was clean and had everything you would need, and the communal lounge area with satellite TV and internet access ($1 for ten minutes) were always clean and lively. The bathrooms were a bit mildew-ey but no big problem -- rather than traditional hostel bathrooms, the Big Apple has four unisex bathrooms on each floor each containing a toilet, sink, and shower-over-bath -- this did sometimes cause queues to build up at busy times. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hostel.

A great Hostel!
I came home from New York for less than a month ago and stayed at the big apple hostel. I read reviews of the hostel before i went to N.Y and was a little bit worried. but i loved the hostel! as soon as you stepped out of the hostel you practically were on times square. it was so central and didnt cost much either. we loved the staff, they were so friendly, especially a guy and a red-headed girl in the lobby. they didnt talk to us like typically staff-people do, stiff and polite and a little bit reserved. no, they talked to us like regular friends do, when we were thinking about visiting a place they were honest and told us that it was boring and they also joked a lot. very down-to-earth-people. there were air condition in every room and the bathrooms were surprisingly clean. the cleaning-lady cleaned twice a day. the rooms were also well-cleaned and fresh. the kitchen downstairs was always fresh. i also heard about the fact that they didnt have a elevator, but they had, so you can stop worrying about carrying all your heavy luggage to the room. it wasnt noisy at all, even if times square were just around the corner. there were people in the lobby all the time. it really felt like a home and we didnt want to leave. we have already decided to go back. it's great!

Great Location
The location of this hostel can't be beat. The rooms are small. Four of stayed here for four nights and it was the perfect place in NYC. Close to the subways, Bryant Park. The only downside was the air conditioner just couldn't keep our room cool enough. It wasn't dreadful, but we were warm or a tad uncomfortable our whole stay. Other than that, it was the perfect place and the staff were very kind.

My first choice in the city
I have stayed at quite a few hostels in New York and this is the best. Stay here if you can get in -- they are often booked up. The location is unbeatable. Of course it is not perfect and I have stayed in hostels I liked better but not in NYC.

Amazing value and location
I stayed last night by myself (twenty-six-year-old female). It was very clean, cozy, and the staff was great. I felt absolutely safe and comfortable. The clientele was varied, mostly young people from other countries. The rooms were clean and not as small as I had thought they would be, the bathrooms were very clean! The bed was pretty comfortable, but I'd bring a second pillow and maybe another blanket/warm pajamas. I will definitely be staying there again. The location can't be beat, as well as the price.

New Yorkers are Rude, Get Used to It!
When I checked in to the Big Apple Hostel, I was concerned about my luggage getting stolen. The staff are generally nice, but don't get on their bad side or you will get the whip! When I asked if I could get the names of my roommates in the event that my bags were stolen, the guy at the desk snapped, "If you are worried about security go stay at the Hilton!" Later I heard him yelling at someone on the phone, "Are you deaf?! I said we are all booked up!" Unfortunately, most people from other States in the U.S.A. and other countries will find this off-putting. I assure you that anyone else in New York, or many states on the East Coast will act the same way. It is called "Attitude." Watch out!

Good and useful
Great Location, safe and clean, has everything you need, a kitchen so you can cook your own meals, Internet connection. When I went the staff acted more in a professional manner at first and then the more I saw them the more they were more talkative. I think some people get confused between unfriendly and Professional. They became a lot more talkative the more I stayed. Also they give you a map of the city when you check in, and there are lots of useful leaflets and if you are not sure how to get somewhere, ask them and they are more than happy to tell you directions. I recommend you stay here. I am going back there in October. Also when I was there, I met a lot of different people young and older.

We stayed in this hostel for three days with a group of six students! We had a really good time. The staff appeared friendly and helpful to us! The rooms and bathrooms were clean, and I slept quite well at night! The location is just awesome, Time square is literally ten steps away! I would recommend this hostel! and I would stay here again on my next NYC visit!

The guy at the front desk was not friendly -- even very impolite with a guest. I saw it on April 15, 2007, in the morning. He treated a lady almost like a animal, he looked like he was to hit her, he had a very bad attitude. We were watching all this awful situation because it was 11 a.m. when the guests were leaving. Other guests comment that he is like this always -- his name is Tony. The Hostel has a good location and clean but for this guy I do not recommend it because he looked like the owner but he is not -- can you believe if I recommend it to my friend and he treat them like this? It was recorded in a video that they have.

I was attending a conference at the Times Square Marriott Marquis. couldn't afford to stay there so ended up at the cheapest convenient place I could find, which was the Big Apple Hostel. It is half a block from the Marriott. I stayed in a private room (with queen bed) for $US99 a night including taxes. The room was small but clean with bedside clock and TV. Towels were changed daily. Bathrooms are shared. These are also very clean and there never seemed to be a queue. The location cannot be beaten. The hostel is right next to Times Square and within walking distance of lots of iconic places including Central Park and the Empire State Building. There is free internet at the Times Square Visitors Centre just around the corner. Next door to the hostel is a great deli (although be aware they tend to charge arbitrary prices). The only drawbacks are that often the lift doesn't work (not fun trying to schlep luggage up six flights) and that it can get very noisy up until the wee small hours (the room next to me contained a number of loud enthusiastic german tourist night owls). These are minor problems however. I would definitely stay here again.

I stayed at the Big Apple Hostel in Fall 2006. Everything was super neat and clean, including the restrooms. Also, the hostel is extremely secure -- so don't worry at all about that. The staff was straight to business -- don't expect a smile and "Welcome to New York" from these people. I was kind of scared of them, actually. Also, I would not recommend staying here if you are trying to meet people. The majority of people I encountered seemed to want to keep to themselves. There is a small common room/kitchen/outdoor patio but not ideal for socializing. All in all, if you are looking for location, cleanliness, and security, then choose this hostel. I would return because in New York there are plenty of places to meet people outside of the hostel!

I had never stayed at a hostel before so I wasn't sure what to expect. The rooms are small and sparse but extremely clean. New mattress covers would be nice and make sure you bring your own pillow as theirs leave much to be desired in comfort. I sleep on my travel pillow all five nights. The bathroom were spotless and most everything was either freshly painted or remodeled. I was on a shopping trip with four other girlfriends so having a private room to ourselves was perfect and left more money to spend on shopping. The location can't be beat. I would have no trouble staying here again. The night shift doorman Fredricko is a blast.

I stayed here just over two weeks. This hostel was clean and has a great location, less than a minute from the centre of times square. And it has a cafe/restaurant/grocery store next door. The staff were friendly and helpful once you got talking to them, although first impressions disagree with this, but give them time. Although the night guy was a prat but you won't see much of him anyway. However I didn't like the common room it was uncomfortable inside, although the patio was a great place to meet people. The internet was $1 for ten minutes making it very pricey although a two-minute walk to the times square information centre will get you it free for ten minutes. Plus there a nice internet cafe with all the stuff you need on 48th between 7th and 8th. The last problem was the kitchen had no oven. However the above sounds like a bit of a downer. But the location, friendly staff, clean rooms, and comfortable beds make it the best hostel in NYC and it's in a safe area, close to everything you need, cinemas, food, sights, metro. I recommend staying here, and the sign in the common area says "excuse our appearance, we are still improving the place." So it looks set to get better. Go for this one, all the hostels in NY have their problems, this one has the fewest.

Fantastic place to stay while in NYC! This hostel was affordable, the staff was very nice, and the location was unbelievable. Granted, Times Square is really touristy but 42nd street connects to most if not all Subway lines and, as a woman traveling alone, the lights and the crowds were constant enough that I always felt safe walking back to the hostel from the subways fairly late at night. Bottom line -- it's a no frills place with the usual slightly run down rooms, but for the money and location, it was perfect. Highly recommended!

A fantastic place to stay, right in the middle of the action, friendly staff. very easy to meet other travelers on the patio behind the hostel. direct access to time square, very close to several subway stations as well as not to far from Penn station.
