Ferntree Rainforest Lodge in Cape Tribulation feels more like an expensive resort than a hostel-price room! We definitely could have stayed longer. Ferntree is located close to all attractions in Cape Tribulation, with only a short walk to restaurants (it has its own restaurant and there are others nearby), the grocery store, the fruit bat education center (check it out), party spots, and the wonderful beaches. They also can help arrange attractions in the area, from exotic fruit farms to snorkelling trips on the reef. Staff are very courteous and friendly.
Ferntree appeals to both backpackers and other travellers looking for more expensive options. You pay a hostel-price cost for a great little room you might share with three other backpackers. The rooms are actually all small cabins, located throughout pretty little walkways through the trees. Each has its own bathroom, porch, mini fridge, etc. The rooms are very bright and airy, with great beds and interesting informational sheets about the area. Outside of your room you'll find swimming pools at both ends of the Lodge's land, lounge chairs, and indoor areas for relaxing with a drink, travellers, and TV. The one thing we weren't so fond of was the backpacker kitchen, which is very small and requires cooking utensil checkout. Most people apparently eat out, but you can still make a decent meal in the kitchen. This was our only complaint though, and we would go back to Ferntree in a hurry if we could. Spend a few days here, enjoy the hikes and the beach, and then the comfort of this great place to stay.
