Besprechung von Hostelz.com
Smart City Hostel is situated in an ideal location, just off the Royal Mile and in walking distance of all the city's attractions. It's so new you can still smell the paint, but this shows in other ways too, with exposed wiring around the place, and a few kinks still to be worked out. For instance, the swipe cards used to enter our dorm room stopped working four times in our two-night stay. Fortunately reception is open twenty-four hours, so we were never stranded, but it is an inconvenience to return to your room at 2 a.m. and have to traipse back downstairs to have your swipe card reset. The reception staff we spoke to were nice enough, but had disappointingly little knowledge of the local area.

The hostel is well-equipped, with free internet access, either from multiple terminals located in the lobby or via wi-fi. There is a coin-operated laundry, individual lockers in the dorms (bring your own lock), as well as two showers and toilets located within the room for an eight-person dorm. Being so new, the bathroom facilities are clean but lack thoughtful details -- there is no place to hang towels or clothes or shelves to put soap in the shower rooms, so everything gets nicely soaked on the floor.

Breakfast is not included in the room price, although the café downstairs offers well-priced meals throughout the day, as well as a bar with cheap drinks. There is also a reasonably well-equipped kitchen for self-catering.

This is a large hostel and the most important thing it lacks is atmosphere (at least during our stay). The hostel also seems to cater for long-term international student accommodation. Smart City Hostel is not a bad place. As hostels go, it is clean, secure, and comfortable. But just because a hostel is new and modern with plenty of facilities doesn't mean it is a great place to stay. There are plenty of hostels in Edinburgh, and at the price they charge per night for an eight-bed dorm not including breakfast, this one may not offer the best value for money.

5 Brilliant, can't find any faults
recently stayed here (5/7/2008) for a night and i can not find any faults with it. The rooms were clean and modern, facilities were brilliant, and the staff were friendly. The atmosphere here is excellent, and the staff make sure they have everything guests need to have a good time. I was slightly worried about getting to sleep in case it was gonna be loud but it wasnt, slept really well. would go again -- just like a hotel (a nice hotel).

4 Clean, great location
I stayed in this hostel in March '08. I thought it was pretty good, it was warm, even though it was snowing outside, the rooms (including the bathrooms) were clean, and it felt very secure. On the downside the bathroom soap dispensers were always empty and staff were asked by a number of people in our room to top them up to no avail. Another downside was the squeaking floors, every time someone walked around the room or along the hallway the floors squeaked very loudly! The location is great and easy to find from the railway and bus stations. It is only half a block from the Royal Mile and five minutes from the Castle. The hostel also kept a lot of great tourist information and brochures. Wireless is available all around the hostel (including rooms) for free and there are computers with internet available to those without laptops. The cafe/bar is convenient and well priced. Overall the hostel is a winner although perhaps a tad overpriced.

4 Great
we really liked this hostel, stayed here for a few nights and found it to be great. Staff were really good and on the second visit they put us in a room full up of older ladies, we felt a bit uneasy about it and asked to move, staff moved us no problems and were really good about it. The place has free wireless internet and a really nice bar/lounge area, and it's in a really great part of Edinburgh. Rooms are very new and clean with showers and toilets in each room.

1 This is a horrible hostel. The staff are persistently rude. The atmosphere is clinical, at best. The rooms are sterile. There are problems with lighting and with the telephones. The food is also very poor and overpriced.

5 I have just returned from a long weekend staying at the Smart City Hostel with thirty-five international students, and I would like to say how excellent the hostel is. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful; the rooms and beds are spotlessly clean, with lots of 'extras' thrown-in (towels, soap, shampoo); and the hostel has a range of facilities which would put many three-star hotels to shame (free internet, great value meals and drinks, a large enough place for the students to hang out). The hostel always felt safe and secure, too, and it's perfectly placed to explore Edinburgh. We've already decided to return to Smart City next year with the students, and I'm planning a stay there, too, with my wife and young daughter later this year.

5 The staff were friendly and the facilities (although not quite finished) were impressive for the price -- ensuite toilets and shower rooms, lockers for secure storage, and free internet. The bar and restaurant still not finished but should be fab in a month. can't wait to come back in a few months when its finished, the reception area is beautiful.

1 Be very careful with this hostel. Due to open in July this year we booked for the festival in March. Today, three days before we were due to arrive, they emailed to cancel as they are not finished the building yet. Surely they would have realised this weeks ago. Now we are left with the decision to cancel the trip and lose the money on the flights or pay two to three times more on the little accommodation available at this late stage. The least they could do is try and find us something new or to pay the difference. They helpfully added some web addresses to the email of alternatives -- great help all booked of course! Some pre- warning would have been nice or some offer of help. Not a good start.
