Toad Hall is centrally located in a Spanish Mission Art Deco Building in Napier, a beautiful costal town boasting an art-deco downtown and excellent vineyards just outside the city. We have trouble finding anything nicer to say about Toad Hall.
The building has a wine bar/art gallery and a pizza shop on the first floor. The upper floors are dedicated to the hostel. The owners live at the end of the hallway in the hostel and they manage the wine bar/art gallery in addition to collecting the money for the hostel. Although they offer free washing, a computer with free internet connection, and only two bunks to a room, this place is worth avoiding.
The owners do nothing in the hostel except collect the money. The kitchen is filthy and dirty water was backed up into one of the sinks. The dishes are all coated with grease. Counters have not been wiped down for months. The tea towels are grimy and smell bad. The dining tables are equally as dirty. The toilets and showers are old, the paint is peeling, and the mildew is prevalent.
We were told to check out the rooftop patio when we arrived. The patio and the view of Napier are beautiful. We considered pitching my tent and camping on the patio, as it is nicer than the rooms. While we thought Napier was great, Toad Hall has warts and should be avoided.
