Mediterranean House Hostel -- a friendly, family-run place -- feels like home away from home. And, it's only a three-minute walk from Diocletian's Palace!
The Location
The hostel is very well located close to central Split, only a few minutes away from Diocletian's Palace and the palm-lined harbour. The walk from the harbour/bus/train station takes about fifteen minutes, but make sure to write down the directions before you arrive in Split or it will be impossible to find.
From the harbour and train station, walk towards the city centre and follow the same directions. From the bus station, if you face the water, take a right and walk down Obala Kneza Domagoja until you get to the first intersection. Turn right and follow the street curve until the set of lights. Turn left on Zagrebacka and walk up to the next intersection. You'll see a Brodomerkur shop in front of you. Take the street to the left of it, Tolstojeva, and walk for about two hundred meters. There is a DM shop and Imex Bank on the right. Across from the Imex Bank, you need to go left downstairs onto Vukasoviceva street. The second gate on the right is Vukasoviceva 21 -- the name of the hostel is not announced, so rely on the address. Go through the metal gates, and take the stone stairs to the first floor into the hostel reception.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This hostel is separated in two -- upstairs is a six-bed dorm, bathroom, and computer with free internet; downstairs is another six-bed dorm, bathroom, and guest kitchen. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable, and each one is equipped with its own reading light. The bathrooms are small but the showers are excellent (though you may run out of hot water if you're the last one to shower). The rooms have no lockers but the family atmosphere makes the hostel feel like a safe environment.
Common Spaces
The kitchen and reception area (where the computer is) are the only common rooms, but the hostel is small enough that it's unlikely you won't meet its other occupants. The owner, Elda, is very friendly and helpful, and will often introduce you to the other guests when you arrive. She's almost like a second mother to everyone!
Summary
This hostel is great if you're looking for a more personal-feeling place to sleep, and its location is amazing. The owner isn't always there, so be sure she's expecting you so she can be there to let you in.
