The building that houses Hostel Placida is located centrally, just outside of the northwest corner on the palace. For first time users from the Croatia Airlines Shuttle/Bus depot/Train Station/Harbor -- walk to the center (take the street along the water with all the signs that say center. Then, follow the street along the water with the palm trees for a few blocks. Take the last marble street to your left (be sure to note the cheap pizza place on the right). Take it to the top of the hill. Turn right and you will make a U-turn following the street. The big pink building right there is the one. Go inside and up to the third floor.
The hostel is very small and homey. It even features TV in the dorms and colorful linens. The all co-ed dorm rooms are fully decorated with art glass -- you feel like you’re sleeping in someone’s living room. They have huge windows that can let in the breeze or be buttoned up. The two single, full bathrooms are well equipped and even have shampoos and other amenities. On a small balcony you will find a fridge and microwave as well as enough dishes to use for whatever meal you could prepare in the microwave. The common room is good for sitting and talking. Laundry services are available.
Just down the marble street you will find many cashpoints, stores, and best of all, a palace. There are also plenty of eateries. The staff speaks English well. Rooms are secure -- standard keys are used. Checkout is by 10 a.m.
The only problem is that you may feel like you’re getting ripped off -- maybe you are. The people just seem suspicious about the exchange rate and prices of things. For instance they told us a load of laundry costs 5 euro and then we heard them tell someone else it cost 60 Kuna (8 euro). It seems like most prices would fluctuate.
Hostel Placida is a central, clean, safe, sleepy, and homey hostel. It feels real to stay here. Overall compared to the rest of Eastern Europe, especially a coastal city's center, it wasn't bad.
