Dubbed as a pioneer in "flashpacking" by its owners, Nomads Industry -- this city centre hostel -- is a little more upmarket than Melbourne's rival backpackers. Clean, funky, and centrally located, this hostel is a must for those who like their home comforts. The hostel is brand new -- so new even that when we visited it wasn't quite finished. With the newness comes spotless bedrooms, bathrooms, and common area, a lift and even a cinema room. There is a large lounge bar area and a huge rooftop garden.
Industry's main letdown is its kitchen. Though well-equipped and clean it is small and lacks storage space -- a possible problem when the hostel reaches capacity. Management doesn't encourage long-term stays, so to the trendy image and frequently changing guests might make it a difficult place to make friends.
However the staff are friendly and happy to give advice on eating out and what to do. Industry's worth a visit if not just to try something different. It's centrally located only a stone's throw away from Victoria Markets and the tram lines, making it a good base.
