5   I miss Delta!! got to Delta ... and hated it; I didn't see myself lasting a week let alone 88 days. I was there for 5 months and they were the best 5 months in Australia! I had to wait a month before I got full time work, its just luck with farming and what one you get on and what the hours are like, I unfortunately wasn't on the best farm, but we had the most fun! We all bonded over how crap our farm was!!! During the time that I wasn't working, I was able to hand over my passport (which at the time I wasn't happy about) and run up a tab, this was totally beneficial as I could stay there and pay back the rent once I started working!! The hostel itself is nothing special, it's a working hostel, people are coming in dusty and dirty every day, it's impossible to keep it clean! But you get used to it and Delta becomes your home. I had the most amazing times in the hostel and met brilliant people. You have to give it a week or 2 to settle into working hostel life, but when you do, its brilliant! The nights out to Queens are great fun, and going to work hungover is hilarious after raving in your room till all hours! The manager Kylie is amazing as well, she has to listen to a lot of complaints about the farm work, but she'd there to help you out whenever you need a good moan!! Go to Delta if you want a place to call home for a few months and have an amazing experience!  ()
5   My Second Home! When i got to Delta i had to wait 4 weeks for work due to torential rain, however during this time i was able to hand my passport over until i could afford to pay rent which helped. Farm work is pot luck, you could get on a farm with good hours 6 days a week or, like me, you could be not so lucky. This has nothing to do with the hostel it all depnds on the weather/crops etc so be prepared that you may not leave with thousands of dollars saved in the bank. The hostel is bog standard in terms of the rooms, kitchen, cleanliness etc but you come to Delta for the EXPERIENCE. When i first arrived an found out how hard farm work actually was i swore that on my 88th day i'd be running out of Ayr and not looking back. I stayed for 5 months and loved every minute of it. Met some of the best friends iv ever made that are friends for life, had loads of fun on kareoke/fancy dress nights an pretty much every weekend an some week nights at the hostel bar and Queens (the one and only "nightclub" in ayr that u cant help but love) Delta was my most special time in oz for all the amazing friends i made an crazy memories i'll have for life. It was my HOME not a hostel, leaving was so sad. I wouldn't trade in my time there for anything. If your a fun positive easy going person then this is the place for you. some of the staff there unfortunately are very rude an ignorant, just stay out of their way an dont let them ruin ur time there. Kylie (the manager) is lovely "alright daaaarlin." I love and miss my Delta Family, i'll be back for a visit! farmwork is more fun when ur still drunk from the night before, FACT!!  , LONDON ()
5   I love Delta I had been in Australia for 3weeks when i ran out of money and ended up at delta with 50dollars in my account! I waited 2weeks for work and then was working constantly for 2 and a half months when i left for christmas! Managed to save 4000dollars at delta in 2 and a half months which i thought was pretty awesome, considering i drank goon ALOT! I went back to delta in May to finish off my farm work and ended up staying for 4months! Delta is an amazing hostel, you get to do your farm work, you get paid well for doing it and you meet amazing life long friends at the same time! My time at Delta was such a big part of my year in oz, ive still got my delta bracelet on now that im home (we made them one hungover sunday). im going back to oz this year, and if i run outta money, i would consider headin back to delta even though i dont NEED to do any more farm days!  , Scottish ()
5   Awesome time at Delta The best time I had out of the year i was traveling was at Delta. Came to do farmwork, stayed for four months and had an absolute ball. There can be a bit of a wait for work (depends what time of year u arrive and some people hit it lucky straight away) but you do get work. Farming is tough for the first week or so but everyones in the same boat and everyone gets used to it! The cheap bar helps after a hot day working outside as does the huge pool. The garden is big enough for sunbathing/chilling too. Delta is also bang in the middle of Ayr so close to everything, cinema/shops. Its run by (mostly) nice people, just watch out for the manager! Jokes. I made really great friends there and certainly wont forget the experience.  , Ireland ()
4   No regrets Had an amazing time at Delta ... met people that will be friends for life and are traveling next year together!! I was there for nearly 5 months, yeah it was longer than I expected but the weather was against us at the beginning. it's no 5 star hotel but what the hell do some people expect, it does it's job in finding work which out of 100+ people about 2 people didn't have work by the end of my time there. It was always clean (thanks to the work of the Amazing Candice) ... Room 19 was the bomb! Staff were great, got to know most of them. Kirsten is firm with what she does at least you know were you stand and she helped me where ever she could! There are always room for improvements in any place and Delta is improving. But if you want to get your farm work done, meet amazing people, get wasted for cheap, and be able to look back at a great part of your travel then go here!  , England ()
5   Got second year visa, great friends and a husband here ... GREAT Ah I had a great time here back in 2006. I arrived with feck all money in my pocket and there wouldn't be work for a few weeks but that was ok. I swapped my passport as collateral for a bed until they found me a job I liked. Maree and the gang were like family and now one of the lads I met there is my family. We had loads of fun. Yeah sometimes it gets busy in high season and the kitchen gets a bit crazy but I think its the biggest kitchen I seen in any hostel on my 2 years in Oz. Good times and lovely family.  , Ireland ()
2   Cheap hostel, cheap staff I stayed there for two weeks with my girlfriend. It's quite dirty and not just because "there are 100 people working" (which was not the case btw), at least half of them (us included) were waiting for a job. Since we had a lot of spare time we tried to make the better of it and met some great people there. Thanks to them we managed to have a decent stay. It's funny to see that all of them had the same answer when they called the hostel and asked how long they'd have to wait in order to get a job. Every time the answer was two weeks. Even when there were 40/50 people on the waiting list, the answer was still the same. But once you get there, the answer change and you can add 2 or 3 weeks to the 2 previously announced. I mean sure you can't predict the weather and stuff, but a bit of honesty wouldn't hurt. After the rush hour the kitchen looks like hell on earth, sure it's not the fault of the staff, but if there were decent kitchenware, I'm sure it'll help a bit. Nothing fancy though, a few pans and some pots with a HANDLE would do the thing. It's our second year in Australia, and we've been in a lot of working hostels. And it's definitely not the worst hostel we stayed at, but it's far from a good one, especially thanks to the staff. The only thing they excel at, except "being happy doing business with you", is not giving a sh*t about you, they honed this skill until it became a real state of the art skill.  ()
5   My best time in Australia I stayed at Delta 2 years ago -- i intended to do my 88days of farm work and leave and ended up staying for 6months!! i met so many awesome people there and the craic was great. we arrived in the off season so it did take quite a while to get full time work but the staff was always really honest with us they told us it could be a few weeks or longer depending on the weather and unfortunately for us we ended up waiting a while but we didnt mind because we had alot of fun along the way with the odd days work here and there. When the season did begin there was lots of work. The hostel itself is in the best location in town, close to all facilities Ayr has to offer including a cinema, bowling ally and library. The hostel has a bar with the cheapest drinks in town including 2jagerbombs for $12 which was a big favourite on a saturday nite and the cheapest ive seen on my travels in Australia. We lived for the weekend, worked hard all week and had a blow out on a saturday. The bar was buzzing on a sat night and there was much gossip on a Sunday morn to help cure the hangovers!! we also had lots of dress up nights with bar tab prizes for the best dressed and sometimes had free bbqs as well. Because everyone was staying at the hostel for at least 3 months we all got to know each other really well and became like a family. I stayed in a 3bed dorm and it was a really cosy space to chill out. All the rooms have AC and a fan which is great as it gets hot up there. The hostel provides bed linen which can be changed as often as you like you jus bring down your sheets put them in a laundry basket at reception and they give you new ones. The staff including managment were really helpful and approachable and also very fair. People seem to forget that they are running a business and have to maintain a certain distance from the guests to remain professional. However they do care about people staying there and I know they did alot above and beyond to help people when they needed it, which usually got thrown back in their faces. They also do give a lot of guests 2nd and 3rd and more chances if they break a rule, (not with the no own alcohol rule, as its illegal because it is a licensed premises) something a lots of hostels dont tolerate at all. They also have a couple of really cute dogs which gives the hostel even more of a homely feel. If you followed the rules (theres not many and are for your own safety and benefit) such as no alcohol and clean up after yourself in the kitchen everything was fine. The hostel was cleaned everyday and dirtied again by all us farm workers but thats ok it has to be expected. The kitchen is cleaned twice daily but also has a if you use it you clean it policy which some people did ignore but they were then fined which is a fair way to make people learn to clean up after themselves. There is a massive tv room with a massive tv and a hard drive with loads of good movies and also loads of dvds to borrow from reception for free. Another massive plus is the pool which is a great way to unwind after a hard day on the farm. Ive since convinced a few of my friends to go and stay in delta and do their farm work and they've all had a great time and made loads of friends and great memories. I would highly recommend Delta for a working hostel to do your farmwork in.  , Irish ()
1   The hostel and staff disgraceful I stayed at Delta last year for 6 weeks,(I had to stay that long to make $100) rang up and I was told that they had work, not many people on the waiting list and that I should have work within a week. I arrived and it was a totally different story, the waiting list was huge, people in the hostel had been told exactly the same as I had when they had phoned up or had just arrived but once you handed over some money and spoken to other backpackers it was a totally different story. The owners are crafty and sly just when your renewal of rent is due you ask is their any work coming up and Kirsten would tell you what you wanted to hear, 'there are new farms opening in a few days' but it never happens. Kirsten is friendly when you arrive but you ask about work when your rent is not due and it is a different story, she has a way of being sullen, dismissive and rude all at the same time! The waiting list is fixed, if you become friends with the backpacker on reception they make sure you get on a good farm skipping over people who arrived after you and they also make sure you avoid the bad farms, you complain to Kirsten but nothing happens. If you want to be lied to, treated like dirt, and lose money go to Delta, if I was you stay on the Greyhound or Premier and go through Ayr to another agriculture town the locals are not friendly threatening backpackers regularly, beating them up on several occasions when I was there and theft happens all the time.
Antwort der Unterkunft: Firstly we have never had someone by the name Mornadevro at this hostel, which makes me wonder why you would need to hide behind a fake name? Bad feedback is part of running a hostel of this size, with more then 100 people staying here we expect that some people may have bad experiences so we do appreciate feedback, even when it's negative as it helps to improve our business. Secondly if you waited 6 weeks for work you must have been here in April of last year which also makes me wonder why you would wait a full year to leave feedback? I can only assume that you actually stayed here in April of this year as i do actually know who you are. Yes you did wait a long time for work which is why we charge $80 a week in our off season as we never know when work will come. We did have two farms that were supposed to open in April however due to extensive flooding in the area they were never able to open. I don't control the weather and all information farmers give to us is based on normal weather conditions. I'm sorry that you had a bad experience with me as well, sadly as i don't work in reception anymore i am often only heard from when something bad has happened and i have to come and deal with people who have broken the rules, so often i am only seen at the worst of times, thankfully though this is not often. Thirdly as i said i no longer work reception so i do not choose who goes out to work, we have a list and the only time people are skipped over is when farmers ask specifically for something ie, strong male or someone who speaks English. Lastly if you did arrive and hand over your money only to realise that we had been 'crafty and sly' then why did you not check back out again we do not hold you captive you are free to come and go, so why wait six weeks?   , Netherlands ()
5   Great working hostel!!! Having done two stints at delta both in the high and low season I have found this to be a great working hostel to stay at the people you come across here are some of the best you'll ever meet in Australia, at times it feels like you are part of one big family and I have had some great laughs while staying here. The hostel its self has everything you need kitchen, pool, bar, tv room, pool table, darts, Also the guys that run the hostel are spot on very friendly and happy to help you out where ever they can, they are currently going through a refurb of the hostel at the moment and are here all hours putting in the work to get the hostel looking good. The work they provide can be hard at times but when your surround by people you know having a laugh the time fly's by and the experiences are something you'll never forget. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good time while working towards there second year visa for me it was a great laugh and I will take away some great memories of this place, thanks to all the guys running the show keep up the good work!  , United Kingdom of Goon ()
5   Awesome Hostel, Awesome People!!! I stayed at Delta for nearly 3 months and i have to say it was the best experience of my traveling so far. I was made to feel very welcome by everyone it was like having a huge family around me, always someone to talk to or hang out with i met some amazing people and made so many new friends!! The Loaders are an amazingly kind friendly family, and were so helpful. The work is hard but the experience is amazing the hostel has the cheapest beer i have come across in Auz which was a big plus when u have a hard day at work nothing better than a cheap cold beer!!! The swimming pool also lush after a hard day out in the heat!! Yeah sometimes there is a wait for the work but thats nothing to do with the hostel itself its the farmers, don't understand why people get so sh*tty about it!! Its in a great location smack bang in the centre of town, no theres not much to do in Ayr but this was a bonus for me because it stopped me spending money!! All in all a great experience and i would highly recommend the place to anyone!!  , UK ()
5   Best working hostel in Australia Best working hostel! The owners are friendly and really helpful, they told the truth about how much work they had before I handed over any cash, and how many people were on the waiting list. You get work in the order that you arrive; so walk quickly from the bus stop! The pool is huge, the bar is cheap. It is a fantastic place to spend 3 months plus working, saving having fun. Delta holds a lot of people so you can't help but make friends quickly and easily. Delta is a fantastic hostel in every way no matter where you come from or where your going make a stop at Delta in between.  , UK ()
5   Great Place, run by Great people I had the most awesome time in Ayr and Delta made it for me! If anyone is traveling and looking for work I would gladly recommend Delta. It's run by a completely amazing family who would do anything to anyone. Made me feel so welcome so Thank you all. I got work as soon as I arrived and although it was hard work the Delta crew made the experience so great. I met so many wonderful people, made so many new friends! After a hard days work there is the bar to come home to and a lush pool to soak in, Backpacker luxury! As it's a working hostel everybody is usually so tired in the week to party and are very considerate of people working and wanting to rest, however Saturday nights were awesome for letting your hair down and meeting new people! I happened to be in the hostel for Halloween which was so much fun, costume competition which everyone made the effort for! Lots of fun! Delta is in a great location too with Banks, Shops, Pubs and the cinema all in on the same street! I ended up staying 3 months I loved it so much! So to sum up, Great place, in a great location, run by Great people! I'd defiantly come again.  , UK ()
5   Best Experience ever. Delta was my best experience ever in Aus I'm home 2 years and still think about the craic I had there all the time I moaned while I was there cos believe me the work is hard. but I now realise how much of a great time I actually had. The work was tough but the craic there was mighty there was parties all the time. I only went there for 3 months but stayed for about 7, met great people including the staff, and really did have the time of my life would highly recommend it. Thank you Delta miss you long time.  , Ireland ()
5   My Queensland home I had a bloody brilliant time at Delta Backpackers and would happily recommend it to anyone. I really can't believe how much like home that place became -- such a great chilled out vibe and run by really wonderful people, I had such a happy stay there. Farm work is not always a barrel of laughs and the first week was pretty painful -- but it got easier and it really made a world of difference having such a good place to come home to every day. The people who run it, especially the wondrous Kirstin at reception, were so sweet and friendly. They have a pretty hard job but do it well and were really accommodating and straight with you about the working situation. When we arrived we were lucky enough to find work the next day but the hostel was almost full so we were in separate rooms -- however they were happy to let us switch around when spaces opened up and we ended up having such a cosy little space that it stopped feeling like a hostel! I swear the place seems to attract the most amazing people, have made some lifelong friends and wonderful memories, so much laughing and silliness and dancing and fancy dress ... slightly too much goon but I've learnt my lesson now, never again! Saturday night were always pretty entertaining as most people had sundays off work -- every few weeks the staff arranged a themed party and they even let us have a few of our own so there was lots of memorable ridiculousness. Now if you're after practical information -- there's loads of space for hanging out: nice sunny garden, pool, bar which serves PINTS, that's right, no more silly schooners! Plus a pool table, darts, big tv room full of comfy sofa, loads of films and a book swap shelf which provided some amusing finds. The rent was very reasonable -- cheaper than anywhere we'd checked out before, and the bar was pretty reasonable too. Work obviously depends on when you go -- what farms are hiring and how many people are already waiting for a job when you arrive but if you call in advance they'll let you know roughly how long you'll be waiting. The hostels also bang in the middle of town so you're close to all the shops, library, banks, pubs, and parks; the cinema -- which does backpackers deals -- is bang next door. Basically you'll love it there and you'll end up staying twice as long as you originally intended, like me ... and almost everyone else i met there. Thank you so much Delta for such a wonderful time.  , England ()
1   False Reviews, Lies, Bad Owners To sum up the Delta i would say go stay in a homeless shelter, At Delta u will have the luxury of mice, 12 bed dorms (no windows) and a kitchen with 2-3 frying pans with no handles. the animals are treated better than the people who stay there, theres a reason they dont show pictures of there rooms on the website, THERE a DISGRACE, if something gets broken in delta it probably wont b fixed, there was a towel covering a broken window 4 the 3 months i was there, False advertising and lies is Delta policy!!!! Enjoy that sh*thole, PS i forgot the minbuses they use to take people to work are deadtraps.
Antwort der Unterkunft: M, i'm sorry that you felt this way about the hostel, although one does beg the question if it was so bad why did you stay for 3 months? We have taken what you have said onboard and have now added photos to our website and to this one as well. We are a working hostel and don't pretend to be anything else, and we do try our best to be honest about everything we have to offer. When you come to a place like this it is important to make the most of it, work is hard and after a long day there is nothing better then to come home to a big group of friends and relax. This is what our hostel has to offer and i'm sorry that this wasn't your experience. I truly hope that you will enjoy the rest of your travels, and look back on Australia as a wonderful time in your life.   , Irish ()
5   Home away from home I never thought I could have such a fun time doing farm work; I was here over 4 months and loved every moment. It has been such a memorable experience and the delta crew will always have a special place in my heart, have really made friends for life here. Farm work is what you make of it, so if you have a positive attitude and get involved with everything the hostel has to offer and work really hard, then you will have a good experience. I got work the very next day after I arrived and have had steady work my entire time here. The hostel atmosphere is awesome and the staff are really helpful and friendly. The bar was always buzzing, they let us throw parties, put decks in the garden, decorate the hostel, we had loads of fancy dress, games, and every night was unique and magical. I can't recommend this hostel enough. Definitely stop here and go create your own delta experience, you won't regret it!  , England ()
5  this is a place to work and stay and do the best out of your time while you there. yes they do alcohol check in every room, only because they licensed, you dont go to the pub with your own grog, and the DONT sell your cheap shity goon back to you, think about it! hostel is fairly clean in comparison to others in town, Of course you getting charged when you not clean after yourself, how else can you control 130 people if they to stupid to wash up!! same with the vans!! And you think everything is for free?? if you catch a bus to go somewhere you pay as well dont you?  , UK ()
5   Best working hostel, best time, best friends ... The Delta does exactly what it say's on the tin. You can work, stay and play. I had my reservations before leaving Sydney, but did not have to worry. When I first arrived Keith came to pick me up from the train station and even gave me a tour of the town before dropping me off at the hostel. The atmosphere is very chilled and everyone is very welcoming. Yes there can be a short wait for work, but that really does depend if you are coming between seasons and the farmers ... not the hostel themselves. I was lucky and only had to wait a short period of time for work, and it was worth it as I got myself on a brilliant farm (Tondara crew) While I was waiting I was kept informed and Kirsten and Meera were always happy to help with any questions I had (Normally alot). The hostel itself has everything you could ask for..a large kitchen, two TV room and a pool which is a luxury when it's baking outside! All the rooms have aircon, they may not be the Ritz but what do you expect ... It is a working hostel after all and can get muddy, but that's what you have to expect when 100 plus people are working in fields all day. The work itself can be backbreaking, tedious mentally and physically challenging. But if you go into it with the right attitude then you will have a really good laugh and get from it what you put in. Everyone works so much that when we all had a day off we would really get amongst it The hostel would put on drinks specials and we often had themed nights -- Halloween-Bonfire night-The kids party. My time at the Delta has been one of the best experiences I have had in Australia. Not only have I come out of it with life long friends ... actually they are more like family, but I have worked my ass off for my second year visa and I am proud to say I survived farm work. Stay at the Delta if you are open minded and up for a hard work and a laugh.  , English ()
1   Worst hostel in oz two of us arrived at delta expecting work within 2 weeks as we were told on the phone by kirsten but it wasnt until 4 weeks that we didnt get a job. the dorms were never cleaned and very compact. downstairs 12 dorms were dirty with cockroaches and no air-con. dimitri searches rooms every few days going through peoples bags looking for peoples alcohol in the rooms. and was spotted putting it behind the bar selling it back to us. as for the kitchen what can i say its horrible. imagine 100+ people using 4 sh*t frying pans 2 good frying pans 6 pots and 9 out of 20 working hobs. the fridges cut out every once ina while leaving food gone off. there is mice in kitchen tv room and rooms. the pool and tv were the only positive side but there is a hole in ceiling and couches are a bit tattered. tv and hard drive good. the bar is good not too expensive. in relation to work the farms themselves are good to work for, dnt be fooled about cheap rent as u are charged $7 a day for bus. as for the buses they are unsave. there was an accident were a girl got seriously injured and nearly lost her leg due to the bus as it flipped over 6 times. if bus isnt cleaned its $5 charge each and if ur pans arent cleaned its $10 each thay watch cameras. i would never go back and never advise anyone to go there. look elsewhere as alot of people did in the hostel when i was there.
Antwort der Unterkunft: Anthony, unforunately we can't control the weather or the farmers. We pass on work information to you based on what our farmers tell us and we try to be honest, we never guarantee work as i am not able to control the situations that control the work. Occasionally we get it wrong and people wait longer then expected, but on the other hand sometimes people get work much faster then expected as well. Dorms are cleaned weekly, but we do ask that everyone does their part to keep the rooms tidy all rooms are air conditioned apart from 1 room, but that will be rectified this year. Yes we do check rooms for alcohol, we are a licenced venue which means it is against the law to bring your own alcohol onto the premises, something we take very seriously. We never go through bags and we don't sell it back to our guests. With regards to our bus charges we do it this way to make it fairer on you, some hostels add this charge into your weekly rent so you are paying this regardless of whether or not you are working, we prefer to only charge the bus when you go to work, so if you have days off due to bad weather etc, you are not penalised for this, bus charges are necessary and you will be charged this in every working hostel one way or another. The cost of fuel, insurance, registration, vehicle maintence and the cost of new vehicles is very high, however if you have your own vehicles we will pay you for each person you take in your car to work so you can escape all bus fees and get paid as well! And yes a girl was seriously injured in a car accident last year, our vehicle and the driver were cleared as the causes. It was a terrible experience for all involved and i hope everyone has recovered well. We do charge people for not cleaning up, we have found it is the only way to make the kitchen experience a pleasant one for all of our guests as it discourages people from not washing up leaving everyone else with no clean pots and pans to use. It is also a charge that most people do not need to worry about as all you need to do is wash your dishes. As always i'm sorry you did not enjoy your experience with us.   , korean ()
