The Albergue do Carmo is one of the best hostels in the Pelo section of Salvador. Located across the street from the Igreja do Carmo, the hostel consists of several suites that contain a kitchen, two bathrooms (one with a shower and the other one without), a common area, and two bedrooms (two beds in each room). The kitchens contain everything you need for a long stay -- a refigerator, microwave, stove, oven, sink, plates, cups, and utensils. The bedrooms have high ceilings with a fan to keep you cool at night and come with lockers to keep your valuables. The beds are comfortable but they are not the strongest so try not to put too much weight on them. The bedrooms come with a choice of two views -- Igreja do Carmo on the east, which can get noisy at night -- and the bay on the west for a few dollars more.
Breakfast is included with your stay and is served on the terrace that overlooks the bay. It is one of the best breakfasts we've had in a hostel. There are two computers available for internet access, which is free. The hostel sells beverages and the prices are comparable to what you will find on the streets.
The staff is friendly and speak English, some better than others. The hostel accepts Visa and AMEX along with cash. Sheets, towels, and toilet paper are provided during your stay. Overall, the Albergue do Carmo is an excellent hostel to stay at if you are traveling with a companion or a group of friends. The prices are good for being in the historic district of Salvador and it is safe and clean.
