Old Town Alur Hostel is located inside the old town, and as such, is in the vicinity of most things you may want to see in Tallinn. The directions are a bit weird -- it isn't opposite the Russian Embassy at all. We found it useful to print out a map before arriving -- we found it with relative ease that way. Also, the public transport there is shocking -- they just expect you to know where what goes and there are hardly any maps around so try and find some information online before you go.
The hostel itself is rather nice and safe -- it's relatively small and away from the louder parts of the town. We found most things we needed close by. The rooms are new and have decent beds but are pretty sparse otherwise and there are no lockers. Security is ok, keys have to be left at the always-attended reception by the last person to leave the room.
The facilities are decent but not very welcoming. There is a kitchen and common room in the basement with most things you would need, but during our stay it felt abandoned, given the very low numbers of people there. The bathrooms are separate from the toilets and have to be shared by a whole floor, which wasn't a problem for us given the lack of people around the place -- but if it was full, there might be issues.
Overall the hostel is great value and clean enough for anyone but the most fastidious person. We would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay on a budget.
