Furneaux Lodge, in Marlborough Sound, is only accessible by foot along the Queen Charlotte Track, or by boat (water taxi). The lodge itself is quite nice, with a good restaurant and full bar (a rarity in the sounds). However, backpackers are clearly second class citizens here, and are relegated to The Croft, a old stone building away from the main lodge. Upon entering, one is struck by the dampness and mustiness of the building, which is festooned with old couches, old beds, and a few bunks.
With no heat of its own (the advertised fireplace was boarded up), the staff, after some cajoling, brought in a diesel heater, which looks like a rocket engine strapped to a large gas tank. Needless to say it heated the building, but also filled it with the smell of diesel fuel. To top it off, the charge per night was $25, with showers extra.
Except for the shortcomings of The Croft (which are not inconsequential), the lodge is in a lovely bay and surrounded by lovely bush. There are not many lodgings along this part of the track, so hikers may end up here. Might be better to look into other spots though, before staying at The Croft. Or at least have a few drinks at the bar before venturing in for the night.
