Located across from the popular (and very good) "Mike's Original Burgers" and down a quiet side street, Chiang Mai 5 Star is not in the bustling and loud part of the city. It is, however, within walking distance of the food market, restuarants, massage parlours, and numerous internet cafes. The tourist-frequented attractions, such as the Night Bazaar (a popular night market), are about a twenty- to thirty-minute tuktuk drive away. The owner is always present and extremely helpful with any inquiries including activities such as village treks and visa runs, attractions, and directions.
The rooms are a bit ugly in terms of decorating and they look quiet old -- the wallpaper is peeling -- but clean. However, the beds tend to be a bit hard and can be somewhat uncomfortable. On the plus side, it is one of the few places with hot water showers and a flush toilet. Although many younger travelers frequent this hostel, a sign states, "No Lady Joiner" in all rooms, meaning prostitutes and escorts are not welcome here. The only unfortunate thing is the noise in the morning, which is loud even over the sound of the fan.
The food is pretty disgusting. Avoid eating at the restaurant. It isn't a great place to meet other travelers, as the restaurant is small and bad, and things close down relatively early at the hostel.
