Youth Hostel Dubrovnik offers everything you need for a budget stay in Dubrovnik (except for a fun atmosphere) -- it's walking distance from the Old Town, the beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are clean, and the breakfast is included.
The Location
Of the very few hostels in Dubrovnik offering shared accommodation, this HI Youth Hostel is the closest to Old Town. It's only a fifteen-minute walk or five-minute bus ride away from Pile Gate (entrance to Old Town and local bus terminal).
Take a local bus (1, 1a, 1b, or 7) from the main bus station or the ferry terminal and get off at the Boninovo traffic lights (corner of Dom. Zdravlja). Go down Bana Jelacica until you see the Café Bar Ferrari on your left. Take the stairs next to the bar all the way up to the hostel. Be sure to note these directions as it can be difficult to find the hostel the first time you arrive. There is no regular bus service to/from the airport, although some airlines will provide shuttles from Pile Gate of the main bus station.
Rooms and Bathrooms
As most other HI hostels, the rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable, and the linen is included. The hostel offers four- or six-bed dorms, and some are mixed. No lockers are available in the room, but some include armoires and a table. Large bathrooms are located on each floor and shared by all dorms on that level. They are clean and the showers are quite spacious.
Common Spaces
The hostel offers a few common areas. The largest one is the breakfast room/terrace, which is furnished with patio furniture and is empty all day except for breakfast. There is also a small and dark TV and dining room in the basement equipped with a few tables and benches. The adjacent kitchenette is very small and only offers a tiny refrigerator and a hot plate. In typical HI fashion, this hostel lacks in character and atmosphere, but the dorms and common rooms do allow for opportunities to meet fellow travelers.
Summary
Although it has an almost nonexistent ambiance, this hostel is clean and relatively close to Dubrovnik's Old Town. If you're looking for an internet café, try a free place close by -- when you walk down the stairs from the hostel, instead of turning right on Bana Jelacica, cross the street and go down the next flight of stairs, where you'll find a café on your left that lets you use the internet for free when you buy a coffee. Also, note that you need an HI membership to stay in this hostel or you will have to purchase welcome stamps.
