Deco Backpackers is a lively hostel in Queenstown with a beautiful view of the lake and mountains. Free wireless internet is available in the hostel while dozens of shops, restaurants, and bars are a short distance away.
The Location
The hostel can be found at 52 Man Street, five minutes walk from the town centre (climb the stairs at the end of Rees Street, then turn left). There is also some off-street parking if you arrive by car.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The sleeping quarters are spread out over a few buildings, with the kitchen and dining room in a separate block. The walkways between buildings are generally covered to protect you from the elements. Dorm rooms sleep four to six people on comfortable bunk beds. A lot of people go for nights out, so a dorm room is not ideal if you want an early night. There isn't space for much furniture in the rooms apart from some large shelves which are accessible from both bunks. Free lock-up storage is available near the reception (not in the rooms). The bathroom facilities are modern, fairly clean, and adequate for the number of guests.
Common Spaces
The kitchen and dining room at Deco Backpackers are well-equipped but perhaps not big enough for such a large hostel when many guests want to cook in the evening. It can be quite messy by then as well, since the common areas are cleaned once a day early in the morning. You may prefer to dine out at one of the many excellent eateries in the town centre. The atmosphere in the common area is lively and it is certainly a good place to meet other travelers. If you want some peace and quiet, head out to the garden, which has stunning views of Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables. Filtered water is available throughout the hostel, while free tea and coffee is provided in the mornings. There is a TV room with a video library and book exchange, but only beanbags to sit on.
Summary
The best things about Deco are the views from the garden and the free wireless internet. The hostel manager and staff are generally helpful, but you may encounter some brashness or bad language. Overall, it is difficult for us to recommend Deco Backpackers, but if other places are full or you are looking for free wireless internet, it is an adequate place to stay for a few days.
