HI - Melbourne - Melbourne Metro YHA Hostel

My home away from home in Eastern Australia!
I and my two teenage children stayed here on two separate occasions during our seven-week odyssey to Down Under. It is a little bit challenging to find the first time, being distant from the CBD. However, that meant a greater chance to explore this dynamic city, especially by trolley. Melbourne is a world leader for effective trolley use! Melbourne is the standard we need to measure up to for mass transit systems. Once we signed into this hostel, it was exquisite. We had ideal family quarters in an excellent structure that is the epitome of quality, cleanliness, and safety. Reception was always welcoming, even when we arrived late at night after a flight from Perth. Truly, my home away from home in Australia.

This hostel is good as hostels go. Gives the same professional service that all YHAs give. It's not in the centre of town but only twenty meters walk or less by tram. Has a nice cafe and restaurant and an awesome roof top balcony. However the eight-share dormitory rooms are way too cramped. I was really unhappy there was not even room to unpack my bag properly. I moved to a four-share room and it is an acceptable size. My verdict -- stay here but only if you can get a four-share room.

Clean, with twenty-four-hour access and internet. However, most of those staying are older (forty-plus) and/or with families and not interested in mixing. Fairly far out from the centre/nightlife too.

I really enjoyed my time here at the Melbourne Metro. I was meant to stay for three nights but ended up staying a week as the staff on the reception desk, as well as the travel desk staff were so nice, friendly and helpful. The hostel is so clean and has great facilities. While I was staying there was a travel talk/auction by a guy called Safari Pete (I think) and I got a really cheap tour off him to Adelaide. So over all, I was very happy with my stay there.

I stayed at the Melbourne Metro and the staff were friendly and helpful, booking future accommodation for me as well. It was handy having an in-house travel desk, as I could get information on what I "must do" while in Melbourne, not just tour information. The facilities were excellent and there was plenty of information available for someone travelling solo. I will recommend it to others I meet on my travels.

An excellent hostel, but the extremely surly female staff put you off a bit. They are rude and unfriendly. However, the hostel has everything you could want and there are plenty of activities to join in. The rooftop is the best bit. However, the lifts are a bit dodgy. I recommend taking the stairs.

I stayed at this hostel in June 2005 and from what I can remember it was a very clean hostel with plenty of showers. The roof top area has amazing views of the city and it's a great place to watch the sunset!

It is a very nice hostel indeed. The reception staff are not very helpful. They are quite unfriendly. There is an intercom that is used to tell people when to check out in the morning, which I found to be quite rude.

I think that Melbourne is such a great city, it doesn't matter where you stay, as you'll only return to your accommodation for a couple of hours sleep, and off you go again. Either way, after 20 hours on the town, nothing's better than heading back to an open, clean hostel and comfortable bed to recover!

Yep, another "clean but institutional" comment! Not bad for a one or two day stay though.

This is an excellent place. Yes, it's large and seems a bit institutional but that didn't stop me from meeting people. It's close enough to the city to make it a pleasant walk and really well equipped. It's a good place to stay.

"Clean but institutional" is quite a good summary of this place. I have stayed in hostels this size or larger in Canada, and they've still managed to keep the friendly, personal touches. The Internet access is expensive and coin box style - try Latrobe near Hungry Jacks at Swanston for much better (and cheaper) access.

Good to have a break. It's very nice and clean. I'd like to take the family there. It's close to basically everything.

Clean, but very institutional. I guess I just got used to the smaller (usually a tad more expensive) hostels.

The atmosphere is what makes this hostel great. It's on a quiet street a block away from a tram route directly into town, but I usually walk in through the bustling Victoria Markets and Flagstaff Gardens anyway. The mellow ambience of an evening stroll down to nearby North Melbourne shops and cafes is just wonderful - the buildings are old gold stone in the long summer twilight. The rooms are clean and comfortable, amenities spotless, and the common areas are friendly and spacious, especially the rooftop barbecue area with views out over the city. There are several quiet areas such as TV, lounges and reading rooms and the Internet access is excellent. Above all, I liked the decorations - artworks, murals, local themes. A friendly, cheerful place to stay. I love it!
