Colonial Log Cabin Resort YHA is a refreshing, cabin-style dorm hostel. Although it's a long way from the bus station, there is a shuttle bus in the day that picks up from the Greyhound terminal (we arrived at 2 in the morning and had to get a taxi).
The all-female dorms with three beds (no bunks) are very spacious, with clean en-suite bathrooms. The larger, mixed dorm is still spacious with five bunk beds but no en-suite. The shared bathrooms are plentiful, clean, and spacious. The kitchen lacks the cleanliness and facilities of some hostels, and fridge space in particular needs improving. However, don't let this put you off -- it is just about adequate enough to cook the backpackers' specialty of pasta.
The hostel is a little isolated if you have to spend a day or so here. It is a good fifteen minutes from the nearest supermarket and a twenty-five-minute walk to the Esplanade. However it does boast a lovely dining area and bar. It also has a gorgeous swimming pool and spa. There are not a lot of people around in the day, as Hervey Bay tends to be more a base for Frazer Island than a place to stay.
The hostel will organise tours to Frazer Island with affiliated hostels. Make sure you arrange transport back to the YHA after your trip -- the hostel is out of the way and so no one was willing to drop us off when we returned. Overall it's a good, clean hostel, boasting a more mature, funky atmosphere than many hostels on the East Coast of Australia.
