A few small problems, but an excellent place to stay.
I stayed in this place for two months, it is undergoing refurbishment and is much improved since the last reviews were written. The refurbishment workers often started at around 6:30 a.m., been woken up at that time by the sound of Masonry Drills isn't the nicest thing in the world -- but I really enjoyed the time I spent here. They had a weekly deal, which was handy for people staying long term, though I don't know if this still applies. The new four- and six-bed dorm rooms have comfortable beds and are mainly clean, all the beds have lockers (use your own padlock), there are bedside plug sockets and lamps with dimmer switches. There are five self-contained shower/toilet/sink cubicles on each floor, all of which are pretty good. They are clean most of the time, but try to avoid using them at peak time as the showers can be cold. There's a TV room with thirty real cinema seats with a big projector screen, Foxtel, and DVD Player. However the TV room closes at midnight, which seems way too early. Also, you have to make sure the staff know if you want to watch any football (soccer) in the early hours of the morning to make sure the sound is turned back on. The entire room shakes if someone is using the treadmill in the gym upstairs, which also Cross Trainer, Bike, and Multigym but this is more than adequate considering it is free. The kitchen is nothing special, but apparently this another item on the list of things to be refurbished. One of the only problems I found with this place was that it was popular at the weekends with groups of young Australians, they would come in from out of town and use it as a base for nights out in Melbourne, because it is so close to the City Centre. Some of them were alright, but a lot of them were really noisy, rowdy, and had no respect for the place, leaving drinks cans and bottles everywhere, swapping the numbers round on the rooms, waking people up at 3 a.m. And it was suicide if you went to the TV room and tried to turn the AFL off when they were in there. The staff were pretty helpful (I guess everyone has their off-days now and then). Amar on reception was efficient, went out of his way to help and laughed at my jokes (and as they are often terrible, this is taking Customer Service to the next level). All in all, a good place to stay and with the refurbishment there is a marked improvement in the standards at this hostel. There are still some downsides, but I wouldn't hesitate for a second when it came to recommending this place.

This was a really bad hostel. Noisy, filthy bathrooms, no comfort, and less than one star.

We have stayed in quite a few places in Australia and this was the worst. Firstly when we arrived after having booked two weeks in advance, we were told there were people sleeping in our room so the four of us would have to split up -- even though we had booked a four-bed dorm we had to move beds into one of the rooms ourselves. They didnt really have any idea what was going on as the people in our room weren't on the system as being there. The rooms were dirty, dull and everything about the place reminded us of an insane asylum -- including the staff and residents -- who obviously weren't backpackers. They were there all day and seemed to occasionally work in the hostel. The bathrooms were covered in dirt and hair (not hair from your head) and one of the showers actaully had someone's poo on the shower wall tiles. Every time we went to the toilet, there was piss on the seat and floor and even once in the sink. One night a girl from another room called one of the staff to ask him to move rooms. She had already asked many times before and wanted to move because she was afraid to sleep in a room with two people who she thought were going to commit suicide. She was told to f**k off and that it wasnt important. Do not stay here!

Cheap accommodation, not the worst place I have stayed at on a 10-month trip around the world! The bathrooms were pretty gross and the bedroom walls were very thin. The staff were nice, though.

This accommodation is the worst in Australia. I tried to contact one of the guests here, and left urgent messages for him. But receptionist never passed the messages on. So I will never recommend this accommodation to anyone from now on. I booked this place for my guest, but that was a big mistake.

Actually, less than 1 star. I stayed there as an international student. The room was dirty as hell and I was bitten by ticks over my whole body. I am allergic to insects' poison; I had a 39 degrees C fever and spent over $100 for medicine. I had run away from there but they forced me to pay another a few days rent because they said I had a contract; it was a lie! Also, it was noisy as hell. The walls were so thin, I could hear others very well. Obviously, there was no privacy. I would never recommend this place.
