Wester Caputh Independent Hostel is in the very centre of Scotland, in the very centre of deep, green and beautiful Perthshire. It is close beside the River Tay, close to the cathedral town of Dunkeld, close to a Roman fortress, close to prehistoric Pictish stone-circles. It is 15 minutes north of the city of Perth, an hour from Edinburgh, an hour and a half from Glasgow. To the North and very close are the mountains of the Southern Highlands for skiers and mountaineers.
Some people come for the outdoor sports, either on the mountains or else for rafting and canoeing and fishing on the River Tay. Some come to bird-watch; ospreys nest very close to the hostel. Many come for the peace and serenity of the place and the area, to read, to enjoy the network of country roads (ideal for cycling), the woodland and the river walks.
The hostel welcomes musicians and various instruments are available for the use of hostellers (piano, fiddle, accordian, guitar, mandolin, bodhran etc.)The hosts, Wilma and Roy, have been involved with traditional music for many years. After the evening meal there is often singing and dancing in front of the log-burning stove.
Music, good conversation and a kitchen equipped for serious cooking -these and the magic of the Perthshire countryside are what Wester Caputh is all about.
