Cray Cottage, owned and operated by Jakki and Don, is a charming little place to stay in the beachside town of Kaikoura. They are located about a 15 minute walk out from the main center of town, but offer free rides to and from the bus stop as well as loaner bicycles while you're staying with them.
The hostel is located in a separate building behind their house. The dormitory, bathrooms, and kitchen are very clean and beds are made up with linens and duvets which is a nice touch. Being a small hostel (offering less than 20 beds), their facilities are very adequate with plenty of toilet/shower space for everyone. Also attributable to the size of the hostel, it also has a quiet, homey atmosphere with Don and Jakki doing all they can to make you comfortable while you're there. Various signs offered rides to the market and other various places around town for nominal fees.
The front portion of the cottage is a great room style set up with built in benches with cushions lining two walls of the the one side of the room with a large dining table in the middle of the room and the kitchen bounding the other side of the great room. The multifunctionality of the space would be akward at a larger hostel, but since Cray Cottage is small, it works to provid a cozy common area.
Kaikoura is known for whale and dolphin watching cruises as well as their little bit of the coastline and Cray Cottage is a great place to relax while you're there!
