Elkes Inner City Backpackers Lodge is located on Mitchell Street just past the Stuart Highway, about five to ten minutes from the main group of hostels and stores further up the street. In the opposite direction you can find the seasonal Mindil Beach night markets, the museum, and so on.
Elkes isn't the perfect backpackers, but it does try to make you feel welcome. The reception area is large and brightly painted, with travel help desks and brochures as well. At least some dorm rooms have only four beds (in the form of two bunks) which is nice, and the air-conditioning units work hard to keep you at least a little cooler than the outside temperature! The beds aren't the most comfortable as the mattresses are a tad thin, but sheets are included.
The kitchen is located upstairs, and is where you'll find free toast in the mornings. It seems pretty basic and perhaps not very well equipped, but many travellers might find themselve eating out at night anyway (free meal passes to certain bars aren't hard to come by). The large table-filled porch outside the kitchen is surrounded by leafy green trees, which can be found throughout the property's gardens. Bathrooms, which are located in a few locations around the building, could certainly use some updating and perhaps a good cleaning and might be what you like least here. Otherwise, prices are decent (they seem to accept any backpacker discount card, but are officially VIP), and on the whole everything isn't too bad. The hostel itself isn't one of the favorites in town, but can easily improve with a little work.
