Besprechung von Hostelz.com
Hidden behind trees and the seedy nightlife of King's Cross is the oddly named Pink House. It's actually in a great location, given that it's not actually on Kings Cross main street, so it's away from that hustle and bustle. However, it is quite within an easy walking distance to the train station. To get here, one has to merely turn left out of the Kings Cross Station and proceed up Kings Cross Road until you reach the spherical fountain. Turn right down the small road here (An ANZ cashpoint is there) and walk down. Pink House is hidden behind some trees.

The hostel is a large, old converted pink Victorian house, with high ceilings and plenty of room. Dorms are large and comfortable, spread over three floors, with sinks and wardrobes. There appear to be many six-bed dorms and a couple four-bed dorms. One gripe here -- when we reserved, we asked for a four-bed dorm. On check in, we were asked if a six was okay, as there were no fours available. Rooms are relatively clean and each floor is cleaned on a different day. The bathrooms are small and cramped, but sufficient. They appear to be cleaned once a day, but there is a significant buildup of mould on the shower walls.

Downstairs, there is largish TV room, with sofas to get comfy in. A huge, overloaded book exchange cabinet resides here also. The kitchen is adequate, but it appears crockery resides in the rooms. This wasn't explained to us. There are also three outdoor seating areas, which are rather pleasant. Pink House also offers free internet access and breakfast, which is always a welcome relief.

The only real downside to the hostel is the overwhelming presence of long-termers. There are a good few people here who have been there for some time and obviously know each other well. This adds to a sense of cliquiness about the place that is a bit hostile to newcomers. If you must stay in Kings Cross, stay at the Pink House, probably the best in the area.

Dirty, smelly, unorganized
Maybe if the people at this place knew how to keep a reservation the experience would not have been so tainted. We booked our stay at least a month in advance and then midway through our stay got booted out due to no fault of our own, but because the staff working the front desk had overbooked the place. The place is pretty colourful (people included), but if you prefer a place that has people that don't have holes in their ears, and where people actually go to sleep for a few hours this is probably not the place to be.

Nice but very cliquey
The location and set-up are great. No noise and easy to sleep at night. Several people were friendly, especially the travelers, but the majority of people are long-termers and tend to keep to themselves or those they know. I would recommend it for people staying in Sydney longer term or looking for work, but not for travelers.

At first this place was intimidating because it seemed that everyone was German or English and have been there for months. People were really friendly though once I opened up and the noise wasn't an issue. There was always a group that was going out and would welcome anyone to join them and there was always a group that would hang around the hostel who would be willing to share stories and drinks. This place really had character.

All in all, a good hostel. The staff were very friendly, and the organised social activities made it easy to make friends. The kitchen had an oven as well and the free brekki was a perk. The rooms were comfortable. The only thing strange about the place was that there seemed to be a clique of people who'd been staying there for a while, who weren't particularly welcoming to newcomers, and it was because of this that we didn't stay longer.

Am I alone in thinking this hostel is a dump? Could live with the fact the room was dirty but the staff were SO unfriendly and up themselves, straight out of London complete with all the attitude. There was one young english bloke in particular who seemed really arrogant and unhelpful. None of the other guests were remotely friendly, everyone looked miserable here to be frank. No one on hand to tell drunken idiots to stop singing in the corridor for half an hour at 3am to shut up. Terrible - not recommended.

Pretty nice hostel, quite litte street, but you have to walk through Kings Cross - Red light district, so I was lucky to be there with a male friend!! Bedides it's really good there, free Brekki is o.k., but be careful, the kitchen is closed after 10p.m., including the fridges!!! Nice garden to sit in the evening to drink some beer, talk to others, and just a short walk to the botanical gardens, Mrs Macquaries Chair, Sydney Opera and so on. And it's really quite in the rooms though it's absolutely city central. Really a good place to stay!

This hostel was absolutely fantastic. The location was great — in a quiet side street of Kings Cross but only a 2-minute walk to all the bars. The staff are incredible. They were really welcoming and bent over backwards to help. Nothing seemed to be too much effort. The thing I liked most about this place was that it felt like you were coming home at the end of the day, rather than going back to a hostel — and the place was really friendly.

The Pink House is a fantastic place to stay in Sydney and I would tell anyone visiting Sydney to stay here. It's an old house converted into a hostel, so you actually feel like you're in a homely environment instead of some of the bigger hostels I've stayed in. There's a really friendly feeling to the hostel, and being an independent traveler, I find it's sometimes hard to fit into a new hostel. I have stayed in other hostels around Australia and found that there is usually a group of long termers who make no effort to talk to newcomers. The Pink House has its long termers, but as soon as you sit in the outside courtyard or TV room they will include you in their conversations or invite you out for a drink with them! I loved my stay in The Pink House. The staff were great and very helpful, the house was clean but my favorite thing has to be the bunk beds, which were made of sturdy wood so if the person sharing your bunk is a fidget, you didn't feel a thing! Plus there was always something going on. They have this amazing barbecue every week for just $5 and the week I was there, there was so much food we could take some for breakfast or lunch the next day! I was only booked in for a couple of nights but ended up staying two weeks! So if you are visiting Sydney and are looking for somewhere to stay, do yourself a favor and book The Pink House and have an unforgettable time — I did. Thanks Pink House, hopefully I'll see you again when I've saved enough money to return!

This well-situated funky hostel holds that key 'x' factor that makes it one of the best hostels I've stayed in. The hostel itself resembles an oversized house with clean rooms and facilities, as well as great communal areas. However, it is the people that make it such a great place. The staff go well over their call of duty to make your stay memorable and heaps of fun, and the people that choose to stay there are usually very sociable and friendly. Within hours of arriving you'll have a group of mates to go out with.

This place is a little oasis right in the heart of Kings Cross and you would never know you were in Kings Cross. It's hidden away a little. It was so nice to arrive in a big city and find a home away from home. It took all the nervous jitters I had about travelling, away. Stay here, it's a great place and they got me both my jobs and I was able to stay and work in Sydney.

This hostel is the "diamond in the rough" of Sydney hostels. I only stayed for a week but I could have stayed a year (and many people do!). The staff are amazing — friendly, helpful, great fun, and very welcoming. The atmosphere is fantastic and even though Kings Cross has a bad reputation, I would not have had it any other way. If you want to feel at home while you are away, stay here!

I've been around the whole of Oz and this is by far my favorite by a very long way! I was recommended to this hostel by my mates who were here back in 1998! The main factor is the layout and size, not too big, not too small, great courtyard, etc. It simply works extremely well for meeting everyone, and isn't this the best thing about our backpacking adventures??? Meeting so many great people, yeah?! Reunions have already been taking place and many more will be with the "family" that we are now members of! Secondly the staff are fantastic. They are very helpful and all the rules are common sense. And they truly are thinking of our welfare and happiness, unlike most other hostels who want to glean their commission off the tours they want to sell you or make you spend every last dollar in their crappy backpacker bar so you never see anything of the city you're staying in. All the people staying here just seem to be great people, and it's no problem making friends, especially with the long-termers. The location is great, just out the back of Kings Cross, so it's nice and quiet but everything is happening 24/7 just a one-minute walk around the corner. They offer all the same free stuff as almost every other hostel in town for those that gauge hostel by the free stuff only (!?!?!) but this has so much more to offer, believe me. I've come back to this hostel five times now, clocking up months here, and do tend to call it my home away from home. Pink rocks!
