Those who like standardisation in their youth hostels will be well satisfied with HI - Wolfsburg, while those who like a little individuality about the place will find it wanting.
The Location
The hostel is in a fairly good location. It's quite close to the train station and therefore also close to the designer outlet shopping centre, the Autostadt, and the Phaeno Museum. The street it's on is quiet and seems trouble-free.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dorms have two, four, or six beds and are spotlessly clean. The rooms include wooden cupboards that can be used as lockers and the dorms are lockable. Shower blocks are adequate for the number of beds and their is space and a bench outside the shower cubicle for clothes storage as well as the usual soap and shower gel dishes in the cubicle itself. Toilets and showers are separate and the showers are single sex.
Common Spaces
The hostel has the usual common spaces -- kitchen, common room, games, and TV rooms and all of these are up to the standard that might be expected of a HI-affiliated hostel. Beyond this, the hostel doesn't have much distinctive to offer. It is a quietly friendly place but there is not much social activity in it and alcohol is not permitted (although this notice is occasionally ignored by guests and the hostel is unstaffed at night so there is no one to put a stop to it). The lack of a twenty-four-hour reception also brings another problem as those arriving on a train after 10:30 p.m. will find themselves locked out and without even an emergency telephone number to get in contact with someone (something that would also be useful in the event of rowdy behaviour).
Summary
HI - Wolfsburg epitomises the standard HI youth hostel -- comfortable and clean. Unlike many other HI hostels, however, it does little to make a lasting impression on its guests and promotes a rather subdued atmosphere. The lack of a twenty-four-hour reception could bring problems so be sure to arrive early or book somewhere else (there is a reasonably-priced hotel nearby) for your first night. As it's the only hostel in town, if you're a budget traveler in Wolfsburg you're likely to find yourself there and you could certainly do a lot worse.
