Besprechung von Hostelz.com
HI - Stayokay Amsterdam Stadsdoelen Hostel is a large hostel with a institutional feel to it. Some of the staff can be unfriendly, and even talking to them usually involves waiting in line for at least ten minutes. Amsterdam is a popular city with the backpacking crowd, so this place is often packed full, especially in the summer. They are helpful in helping find things to do around the city and provide some discounts on museum admission and other activities.

The Location

The best thing about this hostel is the location! An easy walk from the train station and just a couple of minutes away from the red light district. It overlooks the canals and is a very safe, peaceful area, just outside of the noisy tourist zone -- very close to everything.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are huge, with lots of beds. The mattresses leave a lot to be desired, and the sheets and blankets have definitely seen better days. The rooms and the hallways are continuously filthy with dust and dirt, and the state of the bathrooms is appalling -- the trash cans are not emptied even when they are overflowing, leading to a problem with cockroaches and other bugs crawling all over them and all over the bathroom. Vomit covering the bathrooms is also standard for this hostel, and none of the staff bothers to do anything about it. They do provide gigantic lockers in the hallways outside of the rooms, which is necessary with all of the creepy people milling about.

Common Spaces

There isn't much community here. The bar downstairs can get busy, but overall it's not a great place to meet people, though they do have cheap beer, TVs, pool table, and friendly bartenders.

Summary

Staying at this hostel feels like staying at a creepy mental institution, not to mention that it smells funky, and is dirty beyond any normal standards, But for the price it might be hard to get anything better in such a central location, especially if you plan on staying away from the hostel as much as possible.

So-so
I think that if you plan to visit Amsterdam, it doesn't really matter where you stay since you will be quite busy trying out the coffee shops. So while this hostel wasn't really clean or up to HI standards, it didn't matter to us, in our ''state of being." If you plan to party, this hostel is fine. If you are in amsterdam for a more serious trip, find another place.

Safe but too big
It's just too big and the social factor suffers as a result. Dorms are huge which pretty much gaurantees you will get at least one snorer. The beds are so-so and the bathrooms could be a lot cleaner than they are. Its average clean, not what you would call "clean" but not "dirty" either, although the lockers are huge (which is good) and it is very safe (which can sometimes be a concern in A'dam). The bar is ok but no one goes there, although the barchick is/was pretty good. You don't need to be hanging around in the hostel bar in A'dam anyway, the city is crazy. Not the best place for a single traveler though because it really does lack that social element, I wouldn't stay here again.

This place accommodates the masses
This hostel is meant to accommodate lots of people. I stayed in a 20 person room. The bathroom is huge, with about six showers and six sinks and six toilets per bathroom. They were also coed, which was kinda cool. The best thing about this place was the locker. I think I could have gotten in without a problem. Nothing about this place is too personal, since there are so many people staying there. I would venture to guess that there are 100 guests. I could still sleep well even in the 20 person room. I'm going to describe the things I feel are most important when considering a place to stay: 1. Location: Ok. I had the hardest time finding this place even after staying there a couple nights. The nearest tram is about three blocks, so it takes a while to get there. 2. Price: Ok. I booked this place for $35USD per night thru hostelz.com in shoulder season 3. Food: Good. Free breakfast..had some meat and cheese. Bar/dining room has food you can order at a reasonable price. I liked the setting 4. Curfew: Good. None! 5. Internet: Ok. Rate wasn't that good. You can view hostelling international site for free.

Solidly satisfactory
Stayokay was a great hostel, the best of the two I've stayed at in Amsterdam (see my review of Aivengo Youth Hostel). Two friends, my sister and I all stayed there for three nights in June 2007. I'll start with the bad and end with the good. The Bad: There wasn't much to complain about. We did have to climb 4 flights of stairs to get to our room, but that's pretty standard for Amsterdam. The community-style bathrooms were a little cramped, but definitely clean and adequate. The internet in the lobby was quite expensive, but that's fine if you're paying for convenience. Sometimes, dealing with the lockers became frustrating, but I wasn't used to lockers at the time. The Good: The staff spoke great English and was super friendly. The location was fabulous, outside of the super-touristy areas yet central. Plenty of bike parking (but where isn't there?). The room was huge, light, and airy, and even though we shared with 14 other people, it somehow felt private. Beautiful views from the rooms and the (FREE!) breakfast room. I loved the TV room, which was downstairs and less frequented, but a nice casual place to meet people if you aren't into partying (though that was also offered, in the bar). Overall, I really enjoyed my stay at Stayokay stadsdoelen. It was a great experience in a great city.

Mouse!
Stayokay was a decent hostel, but it was lacking in any sort of social atmosphere. The showers were mouldy and did not drain properly, but at least they were hot. We had a twelve-person dorm, and the whole place has a very institutional feel. One afternoon, our room even had its own pet, a decent sized mouse running around. That alone probably says something about overall cleanliness of the place. Breakfast was very good for being included in the price, but you have to get up pretty early (ends at 9:30).

Clean, safe, and friendly!
I booked to stay at this hostel purely on the basis of the reviews on Hostelz.com and I wasn't disappointed. It was my first time in a youth hostel and despite all my preconceptions it was a lot better than I'd imagined. I stayed in a twenty-bedded room, which was fine. The fresh, clean bedding (which you pick up on arrival) was perfect, and the bed was comfortable enough. The shower/toilet facilities were fine too. The security was up to scratch, with lockers (5 euro deposit for padlocks) and key cards to enter the locker area and dorm. You'll feel safe in this place. The hostel is also convenient for town, whilst being away from the busier areas (meaning it's quieter at night), and the staff were both friendly and helpful. But breakfast was the undoubted highlight, with an "eat and drink as much as you like" buffet served from 7:30 to 9:30, which I only missed once -- yes, I was gutted! All-in-all I would definitely recommend Stayokay Stadsdoelen to anyone visiting Amsterdam.

Very nice, very nice indeed. However, there was a few flaws to our visit. Number one, it is in the heart of the gay district, and being a christian i was not impressed. Number two, when i checked into room number ten on the ground floor i was greeted with a stench that was awful. There was sick on the wall next to bed four, there was sick in the sink (looked like mushrooms), pubic hair on the floor, and a she/male in bed one. Having got over the initial shock of the gays, i made my way down to the basement. The basement was empty one night with pornography left playing at full volume, and the second night we found a bearded man, looking in a very dazed and confused state. We turned back on the low grade porn to get the man's attention. After waking him, we engaged in a long conversation about where he lived. we went for a short walk to the courtyard outside room ten, where we were greeted by a flying fizzed up (out of date) bottle of coca-cola light. The bottle landed, narrowly missing bearded man and exploded. we were drenched. But, as we are in today's modern society, we forgive and forget and thank jesus for our existence. There was only one other problem. The staff were deported from another hostel. They are moved when they misbehave or do drugs on their shift. Whilst on drugs, we met one blonde lady who couldn't speak properly. her tongue was broken.

This hostel was great! the location is walking distance to the train station and pretty much walking distance to everywhere. I liked that it wasn't in the city center or red light district because it was in a really safe and quiet area. you might want to bring earplugs for the twenty-bed dorms as i had a horrible cougher next to me one night and couldn't sleep, but thats not the hostels fault! the breakfast is free, so take what you can get. They provide you with a lock for your locker which is nice, and the beds are very clean and quite comfy!

This hostel gets five stars for location! It's very easy to find -- super close to most of the sights and the train station. In a safe location. I was in a twenty-bed dorm which I'll try to not do again -- that's just too many people! I do like the fact that the sheets are ridiculously clean -- starched of every germ. The beds themselves are decent, not too squeaky. I like their oversized lockers which you can lock yourself. Their Internet was, I believe, $2.50 euro for half an hour which is standard. The bar does have a happy hour and the food looked pretty tasty. I was only in this hostel for two nights and I stayed in the actual hostel for only one night so I think there are a lot of things I haven't explored. Overall, I do think that it's not as new or shiny as the other hostels I stayed at. However, given that it's been used and abused as much is in Amsterdam, it's quite good. I'd try a smaller room next time.

I stayed four nights in this hostel in June 2006. Overall, this hostel is good and the location is fantastic. It is in the centre (twenty minutes walk from the train station) so you can easily walk to every sightseeing places. It is very quiet. The twenty-bed dorm was good but not that clean. The sheets were very clean, no bed bugs. The lockers outside the dorm are very big so you can put your big backpack inside. The bathroom was clean. The breakfast is very good. You have a lot of different breads, yoghurts, cereals, hot drinks, and juices.

Great hostel, good security, and comfortable beds. Faulty curtains led to early wake ups and shower pressure was weak. Friendly staff and good happy hour, get the nachos.

This hostel is very big but very clean. I stayed in a twenty-bed dorm but the noise wasn't a problem and overall my experience there was great. The free breakfast wasn't super amazing but it was better than most. Enough to get you full if you aren't a picky eater. The beds were very clean and bathrooms were pretty clean and I'd probably stay here again.

I spent 1 night there - it is a very good hostel which I would recommend. Though I stayed at 16-beds dormitory, I liked it. The room was large and clean, the bed very comfortable, the sheets nice. There is buffet breakfast included, and you can eat as much as you want. The lockers are also free, and they are really huge! You can easily put there your bag, even if it is big. The lockers are located outside the room, which was very good, because nobody bothers you at night by opening and closing the lockers. There are electronic keys both to enter the room and the corridor where the lockers are, so it is absolutely safe. The location is good, too. It's not far from the central station (I walked there) and from majority of sights.

Pretty good hostel, very centrally located, decent price, linen and good breakfast included in the price. I have stayed there more than 20 times. Huge lockers, no curfew, no security problems. I have always found the staff helpful if I needed it, and they are friendly. It is close to everything: train station, Dam, Leidseplein, the flea market at Frederiksplaats, within a walking distance from the main big museums. Prohibitive cost for internet use, though (you are much better off at the easy internet cafe, 5 minutes' walk from the hostel, open 10AM-10PM, with rates fluctuating according to the time of day). I recommend it any time.

It's the best hostel I have ever been to. Good staff, good bedrooms, well situated... and the greatest free breakfast of all. I traveled with an InterRail-card around many places and this is the best hostel of all.
