Besprechung von Hostelz.com
The main feature of The Secret Garden is without doubt its rooftop bar. Tarquin and Kathrine, the owners, make full use of it -- it is the dining room, lounge, and bar for the hostel. The panoramic views over the historic centre of Quito toward the suburbs on the opposite mountain slope are magnificent. How many church spires can you spot?

The view from the bar is just the backdrop for one of the most sociable hostels anywhere. It is an inspirational place to catch up on your travel journal,an exciting place to discover whom you're sharing the hostel with, and a relaxing place to eat and drink.

There are no cooking facilities for residents at the Secret Garden. However this is made up for by the excellent "all you can eat" breakfast (which is available for a small price) and the evening meal deal, a two-course dinner and all you can drink between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. for a reasonable price. As you can imagine, this leads to some very entertaining nights. The music is always good and sometimes local traditional musicians provide the entertainment.

The noise from the terrace can carry to the rooms immediately below. For this reason the bar is usually closed at about 11 p.m., although if all the guests are up for it, and the mood is good, the bar may stay open a little later. Tarquin can provide information on good places to continue the fiesta, such as the little Karaoke bar down the street (best to go in groups) and clubs in the New Town.

During normal hours the hostel enjoys good links to the New Town should you wish to explore the main backpacker district. Both the Trole Bus and the Ecovia (cheap and fast) pass close to the end of the street. The nearest Trole stop is Hermano Miguel. Initially it is best to arrive at the hostel by taxi and once you get used to Quito, the cheaper forms of public transport are a practical way to explore the city.

Near the end of the street there is a small internet cafe. It only has four computers and is often full. Some of the computers are also very temperamental. Try to get the server (the one furthest from the entrance).

Despite such a relaxed and sociable atmosphere the hostel is extremely well run. The rooms, terrace, and bathrooms are all very clean. A reasonably priced laundry service is available.

The only disadvantage of the hostel is that the stairs are quite steep and narrow, but no problem for the average backpacker. Remember they are part of the character of an old building, which has been rejuvenated and it is the height of the building that provides the magnificent views. The stairs are imaginatively decorated with a quote from Einstein, little figures clambering up them, and interesting murals. The ground floor dorm by the entrance can be a little noisy with traffic, pedestrians, and the door itself being opened and closed. This is one of the best hostels anywhere and you will probably end up staying longer than you intended to.

Great location, safe place, lots of activities, and day trips leave the hostel. Definitely stay for dinner Wednesday nights to hear Solar perform their music and to hear the charrango.

This was my first experience of Hostelling in South America and now two months later it spoiled me. A great place. The staff were like friends from the start. Met great people. The food was fab and the beers on the terrace in the evenings are the highlight of everyone's day. A must stay place.

I stayed here for a week. It's a fun place and very social. I met some really good people. The staff were all pretty friendly, and all English-speaking volunteers, who knew a lot about Ecuador. The (Australian) owner was very friendly too. The view from the roof terrace is great. The dorm beds had lockers and reading lights, which I always like. And the location is good -- by a Trole (trolley bus) stop and on the edge of the old town. So why don't I give it my fifth star? While I was there, the hot water situation was unreliable in some of the showers. They were repairing some pump or other. You could always find a hot shower if you wanted, simply by going downstairs, but still it perhaps shouldn't have taken a week or more to fix.

I really don't understand why this hostel is getting such rave reviews. Yes, it's clean and there are nice views from the bar, but...The bar is very expensive compared to the rest of Quito and the bar (terrace) is the ONLY social spot in the whole backpackers. This forces you pretty much to spend money in the bar when you just want a chat and to meet people, which is what backpackers do! A TV room would help solve this solution. Staff are so-so. They are all volunteers so they range from someone who's been in Quito for three months (and knows a little about Ecuador) and staff that have been in Ecuador for three days (and know nothing about Ecuador!). The food in the bar is also very average (at best) and very expensive. You can get a great Chinese meal 50m down the street for a third of price of the Secret Garden.

This is a clean, safe and super location to the Old Town of Quito. We ate at the terrace restaurant on the top roof each night here at The Secret Garden, watching the lights of Old Town appear as we drank a beer with new friends from all over the world. It was myself, my husband and our son (a teenager who had a blast). Most of the people we met were college students, but it was fun and enjoyable hanging out with them. We met up with a couple of them again in Banos. The Secret Garden is a place I would go again. The staff were friendly and VERY helpful. The owners are personable and are truly customer service people. I loved Ecuador. Great adventure. ruth_burton@yahoo.com

I stayed at this hostel in August 2004. It was excellent. The beds and the bathrooms are spotlessly clean. It is located in Old Quito within walking distance of many tourist attractions. The staff are friendly and helpful with tour reservations and other information. The terrace restaurant is excellent and offers great views. They even have a movie night every Sunday. The movie is complimentary. I would definitely recommend this hostel to anyone visiting Quito.

Within a couple of hours of arriving at this hostel I'd been met with great friendliness, found someone to continue travelling with and sampled the fantastic food that is on offer every evening! This was simply the best hostel I stayed at on my trip and I'm definitely going back! The vibe is fantastic and everyone who works and stays here is so friendly. One lass arrived at 10 p.m. and was out clubbing with a big group of us half an hour later! The rooms are great — fantastic comfy beds, lockable storage areas and most importantly, hot water (as long as the gas hasn't decided to act up!) The view from the rooftop is amazing, the breakfasts are so tasty (homemade jam!) and the area is safe. I didn't have any problems as a solo female traveler. Stay here and meet fantastic people and get a feel for a great country! Enjoy!

I have traveled around 28 or so countries, and this is simply the best hostel I've ever stayed in. It has a great, relaxed vibe, and it's in a safe part of Quito. It has spectacular views across the Old Town in the evening, with lights twinkling along the Quito valley, flames dancing in the nighttime fire on the balcony, and people chatting away. It also has great food, chilled beer, lots of plants, clean rooms and dorms, friendly staff, hot water, murals and mosaics. What more could a backpacker really, really want?!! Oh, and the Mariscal ("gringoland") is just a dollar or two away by taxi, 25c by bus, if want to sample the vibe there.

Staying at the Secret Garden is more like visiting friends (with lots of interesting international friends also visiting) than staying at a hostel. The people (guests, owners, employees) are all warm and friendly. The roof top views are fabulous. There is NO beter place to stay in Quito! Next year, I'll book ahead of time and bring friends.

Fantastic hostel, but more like a bed and breakfast, except breakfast is paid for separately! If it was a real hostel, you would be able to use the kitchen, but that's not a big deal. This place has a great vibe and really lovely people run it, so get in there and experience the magic of The Secret Garden. There is fabulous art on the walls and floors, also.
