Besprechung von Hostelz.com
The Stargate Hostel in Rome is one of a few hostels/hotels that share one building. Conveniently, the hostel is close to the main train station and is quite easy to find. There are cheap restaurants nearby, and an internet cafe/laundromat around the corner. It's about a half hour walk to most of the attractions in the city, but close enough to the Metro to make it accessible. With your stay at the Stargate, you get 15 minutes of free internet time there daily.

The dorms are spacious and clean -- eight beds per room, with a lot of room between them, but only one table with one chair. There are plenty of bathrooms with six full bathrooms per floor, but there's no telling how often they are cleaned. In many of them, the floor was constantly soaked and dirty. And many of the shower doors were off their hinges.

Breakfast in the morning consisted of some stale bread and jelly. It was almost not worth eating it, but hey -- it was free. There is a single key per room that stays at the front desk if no one is in the room. A good system, unless someone locks the room when you are in the bathroom or shower. Then it's a five floor walk (or elevator ride) down to the lobby to retrieve your key. And in the morning, the elevator is in such high demand, it makes more sense to walk it anyway.

Overall, it's not a perfect hostel, but it is an acceptable accommodation in a reasonably good location.

Ok, near station
i stayed at this hostel the stargate in feb. '07 and found it a good price. i stayed for five days and found it ok. the rooms were mixed dorms so not many women snoring and a good nights sleep .The only two disappointments were the breakfast -- a dodgy croissant and a small strong coffee, which is good for a hangover. There a great place where you can buy a nice sandwich, which is the other side of the station. i think it was 2 euro with a expresso for under 3 euro. Be careful in the termini at night as my friend and i nearly got rolled. watch out for people starting on each other for no reason as i was nearly robbed trying to help. (not local people). Have a good one in rome as the locals are great.

It used to be very good
I stayed there in November 2003, and it was a very good hostel for a good price. First night I shared a twin en-suite with my friend, and we payed 20EUR each -- the room was small but wonderful, clean and equipped with everything including fridge. The next day I moved to the dorm, it was 15EUR, but it seems that many things changed since then. The hostel was clean (the rooms and the bathrooms), whereas the kitchen was a less pleasant place and not very well equipped. We had fifteen minutes of free internet and something called breakfast -- a glass of Fanta and a funny, small croissant. The staff was quite nice, and I liked the location -- very close to Termini station. I recommended it to my friends then and planned to go there for the next visit, but now I'm a bit discouraged by other people's comments and new prices. However, I give it four stars, it deserved it when I was there.

This hostel is conveniently near the main train station, and there are lots of cheap restaurants nearby. The rooms/beds were clean, but I can't say the same for the bathrooms -- they were frighteningly dirty and smelly, with grime in the sink and water on the floors. One morning, every bathroom was missing toilet paper. The hostel had a "quiet time" at night but they didn't enforce this rule, and there was a lot of noise in the hallways. My friend, who made the reservation, was told we'd be in an all-girl dorm. Instead, we were stuck with five men.

The absolute worst hostel I've been to in Europe. We came to Rome early and weren't able to stay at our hostel and they called around to find us a place. The nearest place was Stargate so we decided to give it a shot. The people who work there are rude, the rooms stink like Indian spices (all three rooms that we visited smelled like this), it's dirty, messy, and an all-around horrible experience. Beware of stargate hostel!

The free breakfast consisted, as said by others, of a stale, croissant the size of a childs fist. The bathrooms were disgusting, the hallways constantly smelt of poo! The common room, kitchen, and tv room, and breakfast room consist of just TWO tiny rooms, with crappy tables and chairs. And the kitchen had NOTHING. Not even cutlery. It was by far, the worst, dirtiest, smelliest hostel we have ever stayed in, not to mention a complete rip off. And dont get me started on the two aggressive, impersonal idiots running the joint! Dont bother asking them for help on anything. I would never stay here agin!

Well, I liked it. My room was clean. And my croissant had custard in it. What more do you need?

This hostels has bedbugs, and this is a serious danger for the health of the guests. This hostel is disgusting and I should be allowed to say so. If you've got questions: joerggebhard@yahoo.de

BEDBUGS!!! Don't go to this place! I spent two nights here and I regret it deeply. I discovered the second morning what was really biting me, but I hadn't time to mention it to the reception staff because I had to hurry to catch my plane. Back home I had a terrible allergic reaction, which annoyed me for over a week. That sucks! Bomb this dirty sh*t hostel!!!

I stayed there for a week, 2 days in a dorm and 5 in a private room. Great place, enough showers when you are in the dorms. The private rooms rock (bloody good deal). Just the breakfast is a bit of a joke, plus that lady serving it needs to be taught some traveler manners.

Maybe my standards are just too high, but I found this place dirty and under-equipped. The floors aren't cleaned often enough, with dust and other people's hair under the beds. The bathrooms were disgusting, with soggy bathmats and poor drainage (that's if you could get the water spraying all in the same direction). By "fully equipped kitchen" they mean one pot, one pan, one element that actually works, no plates, cutlery or cooking utensils. TWO good things about this place are its cheapness and location.

The double rooms were clean and modern. There was good maid service, and it's in a good location. However, the staff were not friendly or helpful. They wouldn't even give me the number for international directory inquiries so I could make a phone call. And one croissant and coffee can hardly be called "breakfast included." And oh, how they like to remind you every day to take "ONLY ONE!" I was never greeted with a smile, which doesn't cost anything!

This is the most disgusting place I have ever seen. It smelled. The sheets were dirty. The beds had been slept in and not made up. There was dirt everywhere. It's in a bad location. The lights went out, preventing us from getting in, and trapping those inside (because of the electric door). I took one look and decided to find a hotel instead.

Pretty good. It had a nice dorm feel to it at night, I met the coolest people there, and it was good fun. My complaint would be the showers: I don't know if it was the time of day I took my shower, but both times it was the nastiest thing I've ever experienced. I think I need a tetanus shot.

Cheap, clean and with a good location, next to Termini Railway Station. I'd go there again.

Clean enough rooms, with TVs. The hot showers were good, although i's too bad there is a lockout from 10-12. The common room was not open either. The internet is not located at the hostel, but a laundromat a few blocks away, and you only get 15 minutes. Also, the "luggage storage" is 2 euros/bag/day.
