The location is convenient enough, being under 10 minutes from the train station and just down the block from a market. It's another 10-minute walk to the city center. There are keys for 24 hour access and luggage storage for after you check out (9am!). The place seems a bit like an old hotel, the key word being old, with no real common room. The owners can be helpful when they want to be, though I'm pretty sure they like making fun of some guests in Croatian while they were checking in.
The largest dorms in this HI hostel have 6 beds, which are functional but not the most comfortable. Bathrooms are mostly clean, though run down. It has five floors, but there is an elevator. All rooms are single-sex. There's no breakfast. This hostel is relatively cheap and in a good location, but it's probably never been called "nice." It makes you want to go out and see the city. Safety is not an issue however, Zagreb is very safe.
